When I was
bitten by the Pro Touring bug, I owned
a beautiful orange 69 X-22 big block
car with a 427 and a 5-speed. I really
wanted to go all out and couldnt
justify doing it to a completed
original big block car so I opted to
sell it and find a project. Some of my
family members couldnt believe I sold
that car.
I bought this car out of Plano Texas,
anything that could be unbolted was.
It had changed owners as a project a
few times. As far as rust went the
worst part was the cowl. The floor
could have been patched but I wanted
it to look like it had never been
touched so I installed a one piece
floor pan along with DSE sub frame
connectors. After installing the patch
panels, I moved on to installing the
front and rear suspension motor,
transmission, supercharger,
intercooler and piping. The
intercooler required cutting the core
support and building a new inner
structure. Once the car was dummied
up, and the gaps perfected, I turned
it over to Kenny Brody in Austin,
Texas.
Kenny stripped the car down to bare
metal, finished perfecting the gaps
pulled all of the small dents he could
find, then disassembled the car
completely and put it on a rotisserie.
He then blocked and painted every
square inch of the car, frame,
suspension components, motor and
transmission, then re-assembled it. I
had originally intended to do it as a
Yenko car but then decided that a
fully loaded RS Z-28 was the way to go
for me. When Kenny delivered it to my
house it looked like it just rolled
off the showroom floor in 69 except in
Pro Touring style.
Once it was back home, I immediately
started on the electrical, AC, and
Dynamat. Once they were completed I
ran all stainless steel brake lines
and aluminum fuel lines. One of the
coolest things about having updated
technology in this car was turning the
key for the first time and hearing it
run.
Once most of the bugs were lined out I
turned it over to Rivera Services in
Alvin for a full leather interior. My
wife and I had met with Robert a few
times to go over some designs that he
had drawn up. I didnt want an over
the top street-rod style interior,
what I was looking for was something
along the lines of a Viper/Corvette
style interior. After we agreed on the
designs he stitched everything in
black leather using carbon fiber to
make the door panels and Mercedes
carpet for the floor.
