Keeping Up with the Joneses
Heres one more sign that the g-machine craze is in full swing. Some well known
rides are already going through their second rebuilds. One such car was a
resale red Mule derivative built by Shay Campbell. The car was notorious for
its mile-long burnouts courtesy of a 900-plus HP Pro-Charged big block.
Boiling the hides is entertaining to say the least, but when the car changed
hands, the new owner, Jim Mulvey wanted more. Friend Steve Chryssos of Twist
Machine explains it well: g-Machine technology is advancing at such a fast pace
that a two year old build just isnt...you know...that trick anymore. So Jim
and Steevo did the unthinkable: They drove the perfectly good car to TLT Racetek
in Water Mill, NY and immediately cut it in half!
The heavily modified stock subframe was ditched in favor of a tubular C5 clip
from 21st Century Street Machines. Likewise, the blown 509/Turbo 400 combo is
being replaced with a drivetrain thats more appropriate for a precision
g-Machine. The guys hooked up with friend Mark Stielow and purchased the
Thrashers spare all aluminum 400 small block with FAST fuel injection. Fresh
off the dyno at Wheel 2 Wheel, the 580HP engine will be mated to a bulletproof
Hughes 4L80E transmission along with a TCI controller and Twist Machine paddle
shifter. While the car is apart, numerous other hi tech upgrades will be
installed including a set of sweet 21st Century headers and a first ever
manumatic hot rod floor shifter.
More than just a pile of parts, Todd and the crew at TLT Racetek will apply
their years of race car building mojo to dial the finished car in properly. If
you want to follow along with the rebuild, data and feedback will be posted at
www.lateral-g.net/racetek/ along with detailed upgrade pictures.
