Thank you very much.

I am heading to the dealer after my ride to test drive one. The good news is I am in no hurry to buy one so right now I am trying to see whats out there and what people are doing with them.

Love the ride and the handing is great given the aggressive tires. It's quite - solid - and the Rubicon version I have has the front and rear lockers on a button and a sway bar disconnect on a button.... and the hill holder button works fantastically! I know nothing about off road stuff... but it was fun to do this trip -- and the Jeep worked just as advertised --- and I drove it home at 75 MPH when I was finished rock pounding off roading. Gotta love that!

Nice call on the AEV, is it the Hemi?

Couple bikes hanging off the back and a cooler you and Gwen will be set!

Did you figure out the what for on the 33?

No Hemi - just the V6... and it proved to have plenty of power on my recent rock climbing. RIPP makes a hair dryer kit for it which puts down 350 HP to the rear wheels with 37" tires... which is more than the Hemi and costs less and can be installed in one day.

I never did figure out the '33 problem -- it's going back to Brizio's on my way to Thunderhill in October.

SSLance 09-27-2014 08:33 PM

Friend of mine waited 5 months AFTER RIPP charged his Visa for the hairdryer to ship. He finally punted and put a hemi in his Jeep.

That was a couple of years ago, maybe they've got it figured out by now. Said the holdup was the tune.

Thanks for the input Lance! I'm not interested in doing any mods to this thing...but that was just thrown out there as a comparison. I mod my hot rods/track cars - not my new cars. They're just for driving.

Love the Jeep, getting ready to buy for my wife as well. She has a Commander and loves it it but is ready for something new and has always wanted a Jeep so off looking we go soon. Just not sure which one to get yet.

The standard Wrangler with the Rubicon package was really a nice driving rig.... This AEV version with the 3.5" lift and the 35" tires is more my speed - but I wouldn't want to drive it from here to Seattle (a 10 hour run). I drove it 60 miles up hi way 75 to RedFish Lodge and back today... These big tires and the 4:10 gears aren't what I'd want on a rig I had to drive on a long trip. But for rock crawlin' and dirt roads they're awesome. My house to the shed is not very far and not at high speed so it's fine.

Love my Jeep. Have about 7k in it and I've had more damn fun with it than any other vehicle I've ever owned.

I have to tell ya that I had more fun than I thought I would... some of the stuff we did was a challenge and I like a challenge! I don't give two hoots if the thing gets scratched or dented. I have a new saying about how to prep for an Idaho car show.... I power wash the mud off.... LOL

So far I have dented the Smitty Built steps... and there's several large gouges and scrapes in the skid plates... I heard things hit the bottom that made me cringe a little and then just went about climbing over the next obstacle.

I worry a bit about all the "electronic" stuff --- rather than older mechanical stuff - but it was nice to be able to just push a button to lock up the front rather than get out in the creek bed (with water flowing) to twist a knob. No backing up to unlock either.

I expect that by the end of next summer - it might be a little worse for wear... but as my buddy said once I got mud all up the sides "now it looks correct". LOL

Fox makes a set of adjustable shicks specifically for that jk that will improve the ride and handling ten fold. Run them on the softest setting.

I don't do anything to crazy with mine but it has taken me everywhere I've tried to go.

Kelli and I take the dogs out in the desert often when the weather is right. Enjoy the serenity and a beverage or two. I've also been all over Nevada hunting. I'm sure well over 1,000 off road miles now.

Here's a pic of my friends Jeep taken in Colorado a couple weeks ago.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-H...27545217_o.jpg

He's got more in that Jeep than most of you do in your PT cars, hemi, complete custom suspension, all the creature comforts too. He really digs it. They have a little expedition type camping trailer they pull with it and love going to out of the way places in the mountains to camp and wheel.

GregWeld 09-28-2014 06:01 PM

WOW!!!

He looks like he's dang near vertical.

GregWeld 09-28-2014 06:18 PM

Got the plumber working on Sunday - running air... I can't stand to be without it another day!! Get 'er done!!

I use this smaller regulator near the bench because I want to be able to control the air for "fine" work sometimes.

Plenty of line length there for the air to cool down some.

All the drops run 6" UP from the home run... and all have a blow out valve at the end of the drop run. This pic doesn't show that 'cause he put the valve and extension on after I took the pic.

I also had him put in capped off "Tee's" in every run (except this one) so I can add if I need to later. Also everything has unions so I can remove the regulators if they have an issue.

Oh hell yeah!! I've already managed to scrape it up - and dent it - and power washed the mud off twice... and that was the first 500 miles!

Thanks for the recommendation Bob!

Wayne --- What's surprising is how well it rolls around town or down the freeway at speed!

35" tires... big ass long shocks... but AEV spends a LOT of time matching all the components to get it right.

In my Jeep - you just push a button on the dash and it disengages the anti roll bars! Pretty neat trick.

waynieZ 10-08-2014 07:58 PM

Sounds like a pretty slick unit. It a nice looking Jeep. I looked at some of the other pictures you have from when you went off road. You need to go back to that mining shack and drag some of those metal pieces in the building for some yard art.

That would be fun to have but a HUGE NO NO -- that's a Historical site... No touchy NUTHIN!

We're planning on going up there next time with about 30 Jeeps -- but in the SNOW!! That will be "interesting".... They call it "challenging". Which I think is a nice way not to scare the crap out of you.

waynieZ 10-08-2014 08:05 PM

Well if I would have tried to get the art work it would be the only way I could afford to live there for 5-10 with three hot's and a cot! lol
When I had my FJ40 Land Cruiser I always wanted to do something like the Rubicon trail. But never in the cards.

Shed was full before I even bought it Blake! You know how it goes.... stuff expands to fill the space allotted to it.

Actually - with the 5250 square foot main floor -- even with the toter/stacker setup parked inside... it's still way bigger than my other shed was. And the best part is - is that if I'd ever get the unpacking tables out of the way - I can park 4 cars alongside the toter and never know they're there.

GregWeld 10-13-2014 07:33 PM

I did build a new grinder stand while messing around.... I got tired of pushing around the two umbrella stands -- and then saw the two drivelines standing over in the barrel... and the three dead sticks rolling around....Not long after I have a nice solid stand.

We need to put that in past tense Wayne -- they WERE roller cams... abused and used - but I never have the heart to toss stuff like this out. It's steel - therefore it's living (in my world)... so I move it around and see?!?!?! They were repurposed and now more useless than ever! LOL

Useless ? But they look nifty....

When my car is done I'm going to study those investing threads so I can grow up to be like Greg Weld.. and not the guy who used to make wheels. Although he did alright too.

Your shop is turning out to be a really sweet place. I bet you spend hours upon hours there.

Casey -- Too funny!

When people ask me about being Greg Weld -- I always tell them -- "he's dead and was bankrupt, and I'm neither of those". LOL

When Gwen was still in Seattle and I was here by myself for 6 weeks or so... I would get down to the shed and have absolutely no idea what time it was. Didn't care! There's still so much to do - and it will be a few more weeks before I can look around and say "I'm done". Since I'm figuring this is my last hurrah... I'm taking my time and doing many of the little things that I've been only thinking about in my other places. I have the space - and better - I have the time, so I'm taking it! The stand "parts" have been around the shop for maybe 6 or 7 years... and I was always "going to" make this stand. This time when I looked at the stuff - I said "just do it". DONE. NEXT! LOL
