Jer, I gotta tell yah the circle track power glide is awesome. Not sure about on a road course but in anything other than a late model I would run the power glide direct coupled. I was the first one to run one at our track in 96 now all the modifiedes have them. Have fun man!

Thanks. I know it's not optimum for road racing but it should be good enough for track days..Here's a guy who runs one

Back in the 80's and 90's I spent a lot of time out at Saugus Speedway and Mesa Marin. I do miss short track racing

byndbad914 12-28-2013 12:37 AM

just saw this thread...

I have heavily considered getting a truck for road racing for years as a W2W option because they are just so cheap (comparably, nothing is exactly cheap about racing) and easy to maintain. Will be interesting to see what you think of the PG v. the Jerico on a road course. I figured I would look into doing the direct drive setup with a TH350 to have a couple gears to select on the track. Willow is such a fast track the PG might be fine to run in essentially one gear. That truck with a Jerico should haul on WSIR and they definitely handle and turn laps at levels greater than cars 10x money invested. If I were still in SoCal I would have done the same thing by now and bought a truck to run in NASA.

I too spent many a weekend baking in the sun at Saugus, MM and pretty much any paved track that was in SoCal in the 90s including Orange Show and El Cajon, and then plenty of time at Irwindale in the 00s. A very good friend of mine ran a Super Truck (#58 Scott Calvin) in the late 90s to early 00s and I have dug them ever since  IIRC that had a direct drive auto in it...

Good luck with the project!

If were talking cheap racing dollar for dollar spec Miata cant be beat but who the hell wants to race one of those. No offense to the Spec Miata guys. Those cars can lay down some quality times for what they are but lets face it. We're American Iron guys.
Speaking of.....another great NASA class but once again......if we want to race cheap dollar for dollar NASA CMC cant be beat. Maybe not as much power as we would like to lay down but the reliability and maintenance costs are a bit more achievable if you would like to complete a full season in a racing series.

EDIT: Trying to imagine racing something that only puts down 230 to the rear wheels and weighs around 3200 lbs.

Thanks. Dollar for dollar this truck was worth it and is very versital. The PG is just temporary (I got it for a great price) Sounds like we were at the same races back then.We built a lot of engines for those race cars (Hobby stock, Street stock, Sportsman & SW-TOUR) The guy i worked for back then is still doing it today out of Bakersfield. I'm sure you remember Hornaday, Heath, Spangler, Sapper, Hooper, Delong, Phipps, Horst, Harper..Just to name a few

Don or Dean Chase....maybe???? Baby blue 2nd Gen IIRC. This was early 80's they were strong runners at Marysville on the asphalt and came up here and picked on the poor local boys with their trick high-dollar CA racey cars.

Yep, bringing back some memories. I helped with a SW Tour car in the 90s for awhile and then a Late Model for a short period in the mid-00s.

Wreck Miata isn't all that cheap to be competitive; you might be surprised what one can pick one of these trucks up for. And frankly, even if you are dead last in the truck you are likely running faster laps than the Miata in first place :D You basically covered it with your edit, but I would rather come in last going fast than first wishing the car would get rolling. Those trucks haul because they have a great balance and overall setup. The engines have major set back and it is basically a chassis with very thin fiberglass as a skin... dammit, talking myself into one...

Wreck Miata  . Cant argue the value of the trucks. Definitely a smart move on Jer's part.
