Project - Norwegian 1966 Chevelle BBC Twinturbo
Hi friends, the time has come to start the thread about my project. I have been a member of this forum for some time now. I have'nt been the most active, but I have had some questions and have
received GOOD help.... Now it's time to unweil my plans... :) I have a 1966 Chevelle 2 DHT which was sold new in Norway in 1966, the car is not matching numbers and previous owners have done misc stuff to the car. Allthough, the car is in good shape. Thoughs and ideas have been in my head the last two years, and now I'm pretty sure I have it figured out. I wanted a car that is a daily driver, but that also will perform good, but also want to have it to look pretty original on the outside. The car is NOT intended for the strip. Pictures will be posted as the progress of the project goes on. Engine : Last year I bought a ZZ572/620 crate engine, the plans was to use this engine as it is, but my dreams to build a twinturbo setup came to life and that's the way it goes :) My good friend Vidar Strand at V.S Motor (www.vsmotor.no) will handle the conversion. I considered a Procharger, and I also thought about NOS, but we went for a twinturbo setup. With almost no load, the engine will run as idle, but when I hit the pedal, the monster will wake up :) This makes the car street friendly in my opinion. We will lower the compression to apx 8,5:1 and add two Turbonetics turbos capable of delivering 600hp+ each on a 4-valve engine, but since the ZZ572 have 2-valves per cylinder we will not be able to emty the turbos that easy. We're hoping for 1000-1100hp in the DTS dyno, and the engine will be a mild conversion since it will be used daily and we want it to perform as a daily driver. The ZZ572 is not the best engine to convert, but since I allready have bought it, we will make the best of it. And as said, we are not going to build the ultimate twinturbo engine, just add a little power :D The original intake will be switched to a Hogans Racing Manifold intake with small adjustments, and MSD DIS-4 ingnition, Autronic SM4 EFI. The Autronic EFI system also gives us the opportunity to build a tractioncontrol system on the car, variable boost depending on rpm, throttle, speed, and much more. More information will follow as the build goes on... Fuel delivery : All the neccessary Aeromotive fuel pumps, controller, filters and fittings are in house. I will use a 22gallon fuel-cell in the trunk with sump. All the fittings are Earls, Russel and XRP, and the hoses are Aeroquip AN braided hoses. Cooling : A BeCool 700hp kit is invested, and will be mounted properly to force the air through the radiatior. The engine-oil will be cooled by a B&M cooler (BM70297) with fan. Also the transmission will be cooled by a B&M cooler. Exhaust : The exhaustmanifolds will be welded by ourselves, the parts are now in house, just waiting for the last parts to be lasercut. We are going to use 316 grade steel. Custom downpipe that will go over to a 4" oval exhaust system and ending the exhaust with Magnaflow racing mufflers with 5" pipes. Transmission : At the time writing we are building the 4L80E that will handle the beating. Alto Red Eagle clutches, more solid inputshaft, Transgo Stage2 shiftkit, +++ and custom work done by RATS. The transmission will be controlled by a Compushift unit. And the torqueconverter that will be used is a Precision Industries 5-plate clutch lock-up converter which will be ordered after the engine has been in the dyno. Rearend : The new Moser Ford 9" is home, with 31-spline axles, 2,91:1 gear ratio, and True-trac differential. With this ratio I will be able to cruise down the highway in 60mph at 1800rpms. Brakes : Two days ago the brakes arrived. The new Wilwood kit for the 1966 Chevelle. 14" discs all around, 6-piston calipers in front, and 4-piston calipers in the rear, with e-brake. Hydratech hydraulic brake booster. Suspension : I have used Air Ride RidePro E before we disassembled the car, and now I have upgraded the system to the new RidePro E2 with the LevelPro option (LEV7000). Air Ride tubular A-arms, and tubular upper and lower control arms. Hotchkis swaybars in the front and rear. New standard spindles, new Flaming River steeringbox 12:1, and new coloumn and everything. Exterior : At the time writing the body has been acid-dipped and all the rust is unweiled. Two days ago I got new quarterpanels, new drivers door, backplate, and some floorpans. The car will get a new paint (blue pearl), new chrome, and custom CNC machined emblems. Interior : New interior from OPGI, new wide black leather Corbeu CR1 seats, all new electric wiring from American Autowire, electric windows from Electric Life, whole range of Autometer C2 gauges, custom aluminum dash, custom console, and more.... Wheels : I'm aiming at the Foose Nitrous II 18" wheels all around, will be custom ordered to get the widest tires possible. Well, this is the introduction of my project, thanks for looking :) |

Very nice car! There seems to be quite alot of people from scandinavia in here. Do you have some more pictures of the car as i was before?

That is one great build plan. We have a 30K original mile 67SS396 Chevelle that is in great shape but your plans sound like what my Alter Ego would do if we ever decide to tear it apart. Enjoy the build because when it is done you will be to busy driving it to ever do another build like this:thumbsup:

Today we blasted the frame and the front fenders. The frame is now ready for delivery to Cato at Frame Works who will replace the mid-section of the frame, and make the neccessary modifications to the frame.

Todays update : The heads on the ZZ572 has the standard amount of boltholes to fasten the manifolds, but also two additional boltholes exist on the heads. I want to utilize the additional holes so I drawed the exhaustmanifoldflange in Autocad with the additional holes, and got a local shop to lasercut the flanges for me.

Awesome project! It's hard to believe that such a clean Chevelle can be found in Norway without having to ship one from overseas. You are very lucky. And it's great that you had the opportunity to drive the car for a while before tearing it completely apart.
One suggestion: Look into the trans controller from Powertrain Control Solutions. http://www.transmissioncontroller.com Their product is very well suited for turbo cars as it allows for dual load sensor inputs--MAP and TPS. You can set it up such that the transmissions shifts a bit more mildly when the controller sees vacuum and then aggressive when the computer sees boost from the MAP sensor. So it will gather load data from both the TPS and the MAP using one as the primary input and the other as secondary input for very accurate and reliable mapping. Not a necessity, but useful. Perhaps Compushift can do this also. |

Todays update : I picked up the turbos the other day. Here are som pictures. Last thursday I shipped the frame to the chassibuilder who will do the neccessary work on it, I hope it will be ready in a few weeks.
I'm travelling to California and Las Vegas in about two weeks, and will be in California and Las Vegas for 2,5 weeks. Very nice project! Street friendly??? With a 620HP Big Block AND twin turbos, street friendly may go out of the window when you lean on the throttle. That car is going to scare the "you know what" out of someone! WE WANT VIDEOS OF THAT BEAST ASAP...not on the dyno, on the street or at the track!!!!!!

Todays update :-)
I have been on a 3 weeks vacation in California & Nevada, and I got the chassi back from Frameworks today. It looks awesome! :D
The last thing we are looking into are a conversion to rack and pinion, but we will have to wait until we have the correct ride-height so that we can get the alignment right. I also went a new direction on the suspension, I have sold the Air Ride setup and invested in a complete Global West upper & lower control arms for the rear with del-a-lum bushings, and upper and lower a-arms in the front with del-a-lum bushings. I also bought the AFX spindles along with their steering arms. I really look forward to start mounting the stuff now! But first, I will sandblast the frame once more and then put on some type of epoxypaint.
