Mil-Spec bulkhead connector
I'm looking for someone who builds Mil-Spec bulkhead connectors like Wires to pliers build or where I can get the same parts as they used to build my own.
PLEASE HELP |
Howdy,
Check this link for the standard manufactures of bulk head connectors. https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=9405 Jim |
I know this isn't mil spec but here is one that's a weatherpack and seems like a good deal for the money:

I've seen that thread and have been on the Deutsch web site. I think I need a HD30 24-18 but it's all Greek to me. And will they sell just one connector. Vin |
Here's a link to a catalog of cables and connectors. I saw circular mil spec connectors taking a quick look. I've ordered from them with a credit card online. You can check stock by clicking on the part number. Let me know if I can help you figure anything out.

Hi Vin,
They will sell just one connector as we often replace a single connector due to oil or fuel ingress. The hyd fluid we use in aircraft (Monsanto skydrol) will swell and/or soften the rubber in a connector after a while - so we end up replacing them at heavy check. I seldom buy direct from the manufacture as we buy our wire, connectors, pins, pin tools and such through an aircraft supply group. Yell if you want a contact. Jim |
Don
Thanks for the link I think the one I need is on page 8 22 pin #91C3824 and 91C6856. My ? is can I use different gauge wire in the pins. Jim please give me a contact and what do you think of those part #s thanks agian Vin |
Jim
Or the Deutsch HD30 HDp20 24 shell. Vin |
I'm on it.
For the pins - you will need to specify the wire gage to get the correct pin range. They can supply the correct pin ends that will fit into the connector receiver - and the barrel end has a couple ranges for wire gage size. Normal spread is 20 - 24, then 18 - 16, etc. |

Hi Vin,
For the MS series of connector you are looking at (MS27656T13F35S or P, which is actually a MIL-C-38999 Series connector) - check here. http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/pro...sp?SKU=91C3824 Open the Data Sheet link at the bottom of the page and look on page 3 of the PDF doc (page 117 of the Cannon catalog lower right corner) for the different configs of that connector that are available. I'm not sure how many wire connects you need - and the gage for each required, but if you scan through you should be able to find the one that matches your needs and pick that part number. See catalog page 132 for the contact arrangements See catalog page 134 for the pin part numbers for the wire gage you want (looks like 12 is largest they go for pins/sockets in this product line). Looks like most of the S or P bodies are about 50 bucks. Then you will need a 'backshell' for both sides. Hit Newark with the part numbers and you'll see their on-line prices. Here's one of my current vendors on connectors: http://www.wingselectrosales.com/connectors.html |
Here's another source. The virtual catalog that can be accessed on the catalog tab appears to be more detailed than the Newark one.

Don and Jim
Thanks for your time good info but I have more ?s. When I buy 91C3824 from Newark do I get a male and female connector or do I need two part numbers. When I order pins do I order Mil-C-39029/58 or /56 and whats with the color bands. What back shell do I get type P or f and they don't have 90 listed. And what are the numbers under the contact arrangement. thanks again Vin |
I'm also looking for a bulkhead connector like this.
I'll need to pass 32 or so 18 gauge wires. The milspec stuff is real difficult to understand. There is a huge variety...lol. Each part is ordered separately. bulkhead receptacle, plug, inserts, seals, male and female pins, all separate. This website has a lot of good stuff, including a 30 pin weatherpack complete kit, but they don't give dimensions, it looks kida big. http://www.eficonnection.com/eficonn..._junction.aspx What solutions have others used? I REALLY do not want to hardwire my EFI harness through a grommet. |

The one for the harness is a two piece design. You can get it in various sizes, but the one I needed, they didn't have, so I simply ordered a blank one with no hole.....I made my own to fit 76 wires and the insulation thru it. I made the custom block off plate on it as well. It looks good and I think it's going to work pretty well too. Here is a pic........ http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...4/100_2766.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...4/100_2765.jpg http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...4/100_2768.jpg Hope this helps out someone, Joe |
I've seen those, Joe, and they do look nice, for a grommet, but I want a connection. Seems everytime I touch a weatherpack connector, I break off the locking tab! Also seems like the motor is out of this car once a year...
Car is a keeper, and a driver. I wanna just unplug it. Engine harness stays on the engine! |
I gotcha, I totally understand. Good luck on your search bro.

Hello Joe!! For me those look just what i have been looking for!! Can you tell me the overall ( outside ) diameter of them ? |

I've come across those grommets before, or something very similar. There's a pretty big variety of sizes and styles. I found the link in my favorites, enjoy!

If anyone gets these, make sure you buy them from Summit or another vendor other than "Seals-It" themselves......they are about 5 to 8 dollars more thru them. Bowtie, I'll get those measurements for you in a bit. If you look at the link, hover over "Products" and click "Grommet Seals", then clcik on which style you will need. Once you are there, it will give you pretty much all the measurements. The only one it dosent give measurements to is the "Split Grommet"......like the one I used for my harness. Joe:thumbsup: |
Bowtie, I measured 4" accross the split grommet. It's the same size as the one next to it.

Thanks Joe, this was wery good tip and info! I place my order tonignt  |
I might be onto something. A friend used something he found in an electronics stire near his house to hookup his covans dash, he said the receptacle has 4 mounting bolts, and the plug secures with a 1/4 twist, 28 concats, solder on. I'll pass the info on when I get it.

Sealsit !!!!!!!!
I just want to say at i ordered few special grommets directly from www.sealsit.com and their customer service was really good!

If you are still looking for a header (or if anyone else in cyber-space is paying attention) you can check out these links to see what is out there:
www.tycoelectronics.com www.laddinc.com (Deutsch) www.molex.com Then go to these links to purchase what you like (please note: a lot of items you find on the above sites are not readily available to the public. However, you can find a lot of cool stuff you can buy online): http://www.alliedelec.com/ www.mouser.com www.digi-key.com www.newark.com |
Part #'s ?
So, this is great information, but my head is dizzy. Does anyone have part numbers? It looks like you have to order each component seperately.
Sam |
SUCCESS!
You want part numbers, I got part numbers. This is a 37 pin connector set, terminals will fit 16-18 gauge wire and handle 13 amps each. The receptacle is a 4 screw panel mount, roughly 1 3/4" between the screws. The plug is a twist lock. Both Amp/Tyco and Newark part numbers, along with Newark's prices. Got the stuff in hand now, it's exactly what I needed, tho after getting a final count I could have used a smaller one, don't need anywhere near 36 wires...lol.
No pics yet, but I'll get some tonight for sure, and more over the weekend as I start wiring. |
Ok, here's your pics.
Panel mount receptacle, twist lock plug, 2 cable clamps that thread onto the plug and receptacle and have clamps to hold the cables, and a whole mess of expensive pins and sockets, gold plated, rated at 13 amps each. And of course the extraction tool, so I can pull a pin when I screw up. http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp2.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp1.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp3.jpg |
SWEET!
Looks good, but I was expecting a stainless/nickel housing. That would look killer. Otherwize, it looks awesome. Good find! Joe |
AWSOME!
If you were to order again how many wires would you need for the recepticle? Which vendor did you decide on to purchase the plugs? Sam |
My company has an account with Newark, so I ordered from them.
All the variations and part numbers and such are still a real bear...even after doing it once. There is a chart that shows the different connector body sizes (shell size) and there are different numbers of pins and layouts in each size. The pins and sockets are all common, and available in either 16-18 gauge or 20-24. Each engine and ECM will of course vary some but I ended up with: IAC = 4 wires TPS = 3 wires Inlet air temp = 2 wires Injectors = 5 wires Distributor = 4 wires Coolant temp = 2 wires Fuel Pressure gauge = 3 wires That looks like it totals to 23. So the one I got is perfect, cause the max number of wires in the next smaller shell size is 23, and then I wouldn't have any room "for future expansion...lol." I'll get a pic up of the completed harness tomorrow. It's looking pretty trick. I got this woven nylon cable covering from cableorganizer.com in a few different sizes, sealed the ends with heat shrink. Harness looks very trick and professional. And when the air cleaner is on, ALL the wires disappear! You'd swear it was a carbed car. (Injection is Holley 4bbl TBI) |
Great Info Jim!!
Which cable covers did you get from cableorganizer.com? This is exactly what I want to do when I start wiring the firebird. Great stuff! Does that mean I have to have an account with Newark? Can anyone purchase from them or are just selling to distributors and large companies? Sam |
My company is anything but large. I think anyone can purchase from them these days, dunno. I tell my office manager what to buy, it comes in the brown truck, bill comes in a few days...lol
Now to go wire up that plug. Oh yea... the stuff I got from cableorganizer is caled "Black PET" I got some in 1/8", 1/4" 1/2" and 3/4". The stuff expands a lot, you can get 3 wires into the 1/8", and the half inch held my whole bundle of 23. Part number for the 1/4" is BS025BK |
ok, I got me an engine harness!
Every connection crimped and soldered, all solid as a rock and ready to plug into the soon to be mounted firewall connector. Interesting how you can see thru the harness sleeving with the camera flash. You can't see thru it in real life. http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp4.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp5.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp6.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp7.jpg http://home.comcast.net/~Jimragtop2/2008engine/amp8.jpg And the best part is, while the back of the motor is "rather busy" when I put the air filter on, you cannot see a single wire! |
Excellent work Jim it looks great man ! Thanks for all the research and dilligence - everyone appreciates your efforts. When I finally get to mine this summer - I'll update with my pics and part #'s too.
Jim |
 What he says! Great posts!!
