1970 C10 truck with complete c5 drivetrain and suspension with air ride
5 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone! I have been lurking around here for a while as a guest admiring some of your absolutely beautiful projects and rides. I finally decided to register and share my project with all of you guys. I am new to this kind of build so i am learning as i go. I orginally built a custom tube frame for my truck that utilizes the solid rear end and a LS1 motor but when i went looking for the motor i found an increadible deal on the entire c5 drivetrain so i decided to go that route. So i built a new frame to accomodate all the c5 drivetrain and suspension. I had to extend the torque tube to accomodate the longer wheel base. There are a bunch of other things i did but will let the pictures do some of the talking. I am hoping to have it driveable by this summer so i can make sure i don't have any bugs and everything performs well then it will be torn back down for paint and powdercoating. Enjoy

Is this the only way to post pictures are these little attachments? You can't just post the pics in the threads? Thanks

Hi Josh,
Truck looks great. You can host pics on a site and then use the image button to past in the link to the picture and your pic will be posted |
Josh,
Glad to see you made it over here. I am subscribed to your build over at 47-72 Trucks. Lookin good. You can post in a thread by having your images hosted on a site. I use photobucket, it's free and works fine. I'm sure others around here can give you more choices. Once your images are hosted you just have to copy the link into the body of your test. It will look like this "" , I left the http out before the // so that you could see the format. Hope this helps. Welcome again. |
Thanks guys for the help! I really appreciate it! I will delete the attached pics and then just post them in the thread.

Here are two pics with some sheetmetal on. The sun was pretty bright so the pics aren't the best. Anyways enjoy http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...abonframe5.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...abonframe6.jpg |
That chassis is so simple and OEM looking - Man that's some great work

Josh ps. If any of you guys notice anything i should address or alter please let me know. This is my first build with any c5 parts and am learning as i go. Thanks again |
Josh,
It is really looking good. I wish we could make some more progress on our truck. My Dad (The Owner) has taken on a Honey Do project so we are in a holding pattern. By the way, I edited my first post to remove the picture of our cab. I didn't want to confuse your thread. Since you he picture attachments sorted out your good to go. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching closely. |
Looks great Josh ! Thanks for posting your build so we can watch.
What are you doing for the inner drive shaft - or is that a stock length torque tube ? Thx !! Jim |
Josh you are really talented chassis builder :hail: Keep those project pics coming!!!
|
BAD A$$!

I had to extend the torque tube so i will be having the driveshaft extended also. I am going to go with a carbon fiber driveshaft because from what i have been told the alluminum driveshaft will have too much flex if it gets any longer. Not sure if that is 100% true but it isn't a big difference in money so i will just go the safe route. |
Fing killer build. I want to build a 70 Chevy short bed one of these days. Dazed and Confused hooked me in high school.

Yup, You can't extend the shaft much beyond stock before you get into harmonic distortion and it will self-destruct. You'd have to increase the diameter of the shaft to be able to go longer - which won't work in the torque tube - so the carbon fiber deal is the only option.

Here's an online calculator:
http://www.wallaceracing.com/driveshaftspeed.htm You can also hit the Dana corp web site for additional info. http://www2.dana.com/expert/wc.dll?cvsp~Decrits~ PS, some call it 'driveshaft critical speed'. |
do you have any detailed photos of the rear suspension rockers? Specifically how the pivot point is designed and how the rocker is attached at that point?
|
What is with all these cool trucks being built?
Maybe I am just jealous. Kevin |
Keep the trucks coming, that should be a total bad ass when done looks awsum:thumbsup:

There are more than a few rockers out there I have seen that didn't use some sort of heim/rod end and that is a big mistake (they just use a bolt thru a sleeve or something for pivot) and I am interested in seeing other's ideas when they "do it right". sounds like you did it right. |
