im in WAY over my head.

Good day guys, just visited the shop this morning and my body man announced me that the cancer has spread everywhere in my ragtop.
basically i need a new tub.
what would you do?
1- Replace everything part by part
2- Go the Dynacorn way ( do we still need to forecast a ton of $ to get it ready for paint? )

in your opinion, what would be the best route to take?
I want to drive the car this summer.

Some more details would be good, one thing I can tell you.... you won't be driving it this summer!:wow:

Floor pan, rear frame rails, trunk pan, 2 rear quarter panels, cowl dash and firewall, all that and see the pic from this summer.

I would not go the Dynacorn route. I would reuse your shell. If it is too much for him, try someone like Mike's Custom Cars. Reskinning entire cars is their business. There is also another guy doing it, but his name escapes me right now.

The core structure needs to be saved, it is not available aftermarket except in a new tub. Are you figuring $20K with paint?

Yan69 02-26-2008 04:56 AM

probably before paint. i have no clue and no experience with this.
you guys know better than me.
yan
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Mike excuse my lack of knowlege, but what do you mean by core structure?
Rocker panels?

Rust

Yan, look up Mikes Custom cars, he will make it better than new.

Musclerodz 02-26-2008 09:47 PM

The core is the inner structure that can not be bought aftermarket and what the outer metal attaches to. $20K before paint should leave plenty of room.

monza 02-26-2008 10:41 PM

Yan I'm feeling your pain on this, your car 'looked' pretty sweet before you opened it up. Do you know the shop and their work where you have it now?
Post when he gives you his estimate and what kind of shop it is.
Here's the Mikes place:http://www.mikescustomcars.com/
that will give you a guide line of some costs and maybe you could go with him.
Your 20 000.00 should get your car done and ready for paint, but you have to be thinking of adding mini tubs in the rear and front end frame.....
What is your goal for the car?

Good luck with it keep this site updated and you'll get great advice from the best. Make sure you call next time you roll through Calgary we'll get the crew together and go play cars.

Check out Muscle Car Metal too. He sells a ready made bottom section for around $3500 or so on his website and a little less on ebay. He's in New Hampshire so it's not too far for you to drive and pick one up. He will also rebuild your shell. Lots of pics on his website.

Another vote for Musclecarmetal (www.musclecarmetal.com). Tony did my shell (a total rebuild) with all the metal and labor it was about $9K. When you provide him with a car, he will give you a $2-3K discount over his advertised prices.

Here is a whole page of pics of my shell rebuild by Tony:

i dont like that there isnt any bracing in there... but it doesnt look unsalvagble (its either not a word or completely misspelled)

BBC69Camaro 03-04-2008 05:22 PM

In the pics you posted they don't that bad.

Why not have it media blasted and see what metal repairs need to be from there?

Or is there a lot more rust damage that we cannot see?

Yan69 03-04-2008 07:57 PM

from the outside it looked really good, underneath the carpet , a lot of fiberglass patching, bunch of overlaid welded metal and a **** load of rust. i have pics that i will down size to show you guys.

What kind of price is the guy estimating? Does he do this kind of work daily or to be more blunt is he qualified?

Sell that V70 and you'll have the cash!

Yan69 03-05-2008 05:40 AM

He is a pro, overall im in for 25k
hes got 5800$ in parts and the rest is labour..

FlameBroiled 01-06-2009 09:47 AM

I suggest that the car be braced up, before any more sheet metal is removed!!! The repair is not a problem, sheet metal panels are available, and what is not available, should be easily made by a "Pro".

Keep posting pictures so that we can follow along

jst8a5.0 01-10-2009 08:24 PM

So what happened?! The car last summer was that red or orange one pictured and taken down it looked like those three rusty pics? Did that guy just start cutting without installing braces?! I have a shop in Arizona and it's amazing the amount of rust I am cutting out and replacing. The irony of that ! If you have any specific questions about rust and the removal, I'll do my best to answer them.
