Body Mounts
 
I just removed the body and found out the body mounts are solid aluminum mounts. a few people told me keep them,but I am wondering if I should replace them with polyurethane mounts. Anybody have any experience with these solid mounts?

Most of us are running solids. With subframe connectors it's a must.

Aside from tunnel clearance issues, what is the dis-advantage to running the 1/2 drop bushings?

Possible clearance issues with the transmission, clutch fork, scattershield, headers, and tranny crossmember. Can be a real PITA to use 1/2 height.

Personally I have had trans tunnel issues and the stock trans x-member wouldn't work with the stock sub-frame...so I used the ATS T56 x-member, on my old frame that is....

Don't forget air cleaner. I barely snuck by with the half height bushings. I had ATS build me a cross member and shimmed it to my desired driveline angle. It's how shall I say it...a smidge from the tunnel. One other thing I have found is that the engine is more sensitive to coolant level. To prevent an air pocket in the engine,you want your coolant level higher in the radiator. I didn't have any bellhousing, clutch fork, header, problems. If I would have planned to run half height busings then I would have cut the tunnel for more clearance. Other than that, it's really not that big a deal.

I went ahead and raised my tunnel .75" everything fits fine now.

I am gonna tag along on this thread what is the correct size body mount bushing for a 68 camaro and where can i find the solid bushings because im pretty sure the bushings i have now are stock 1968 and there worn to hell.

DSE and Global West makes some nice ones. Im sure there are other companies that make them as well. Just a side note, because I have ran into this several times on the cars that I have built.
With worn out Body/subframe bushings, the body can tend to move to one side or another. causing tires to rub only on one fender well, this can cause several issues with tracking, etc.
When installing new bushings, be sure that the frame goes back in correctly. I know that on the first gen Camaro, there are small holes next to the body bolts in both the frame and lower fire-wall mount. You can stick bar in and line these up, also, using a point of reference from the frame and measuring it to reference point on both sides of the body, to make sure that it is square.

Speed Tech has them as well.
