Best place to buy a T-56 Magnum

I'm finally going to pull the trigger on a T-56 Magnum for my 66 Cutlass (455 Olds Engine). Where is the best place to purchase one?

Tom.A 05-10-2011 12:20 AM

I would use Hurst Driveline unless you can find a discount code for Summit Racing

canrc 05-10-2011 12:23 AM

x2 on Hurst Drivelines

Great service got mine exactly when promised.

That's a great idea. Now I just gotta figure out where 2 get a Summit discount code.

wmhjr 05-10-2011 08:14 AM

Often the discount codes will not work for items such as the T56 Magnum. I'd check around to see what the delta will be in total cost once it's all done so you make sure you don't end up paying the least amount for the tranny but end up getting nickle and dimed to death along with any support issues. Personally I'd stick with Hurst Driveline but that's just me.

fesler 05-10-2011 09:07 AM

Call us up we have pretty good deals on them. Ask for Rob 480-748-2000

I agree Bill. I just wanted to make sure there isn't a less expensive option I'm overlooking before pulling the trigger.

Thanks Chris. I'll give Rob a call.

The WidowMaker 05-10-2011 10:25 AM

got mine from summit with the 10% code. i had the tko kit so i didnt need all the small parts and i didnt want a kit clutch anyways.

jocko124 05-10-2011 10:53 AM

I know Hurst extends the warranty on the T-56 Mag by a year. In a street application, is that worth anything? I really have not heard of any issues with this trans---at least not that I've seen anywhere on here or pro-touring.com.

captainofiron 05-31-2011 10:05 AM

I have contacted tons of places regarding a T-56 for my 68 Firebird project

and Hurst got back to me with an estimate really fast

American powertrain took about a couple weeks

and Keisler got back to me in only  a matter of months, with a quote for a 5 speed, and after I tried to contact them to get an updated quote they never answered me, so I resubmitted on their website and now almost a year later, still nothing

Hurst +1

Richio1 05-31-2011 10:18 AM

I was just looking at kits this weekend. American Powertrain seemed to have everything in the kit even the new tunnel piece. I also like the crossmember piece they offer.

I experienced the same thing with Keisler... No response to multiple web inquiries.

I've heard great things about Hurst too but living in CA, where they are based, I am trying to avoid the almost 10% sales tax but with American Powertrain the shipping to CA was over $1000. I need to call Hurst and weigh my options.

The Summit code seems like a great option but you/we will need to build the kit ourselves. But to save the tax, cheap shipping and 10% off seems like the best deal... But no tech support like with the others... hmmmm

BBC71Nova 05-31-2011 11:38 AM

I've talked to a few vendors myself and by far the most helpful was Jim@Hurst Drivelines. He is super knowledgeable of the products and conversions. Their price was as cheap as I had seen and they were offering free shipping. Once I make a decision and the budget recovers that's likely where mine will be coming from.

out2kayak 05-31-2011 04:36 PM

I picked up my T-56 Magnum from RPM transmission (http://www.rpmtransmissions.com/index.html).

They did a good job at a good price. Nice guys to deal with to boot.

214Chevy 05-31-2011 08:13 PM

I bought all of my own stuff. I bought my T56 Magnum from Jegs and my clutch from Ram. Any authorized seller has to sell the T56 Magnum for the same price. The other stuff is where you have to be careful and get your savings.

69pro-touring 06-01-2011 01:24 PM

American Powertrain gave me a great deal on my T56 mag and all the goodies to go along with it and all responses were quick for me.

6D9 Matt 06-01-2011 03:09 PM

Im looking to get a T56 magnum pretty soon I think... Im gonna need a full conversion kit (currently have a 700R4 auto).

RBR 06-01-2011 03:11 PM

I have used Hurst Driveline Conversions and American Powertrain. Do yourself a favor and go with Hurst Driveline Conversions. They know their stuff. They are very professional and will give you a packet with all the instructions for the conversion. You will also get a receipt listing all the parts and cost of each part.
When I bought from American Powertrain I got the wrong parts for my conversion that they recommended. Also had to pay for return shipping and restocking fees.
Not trying to be a hater, but I lost alot of time and money. Never was able to get a receipt listing the parts I bought. So I can't say how much I payed for each item. Not a big deal but when things started getting fishy I wanted to know what they were charging me for.

This is just my experience

Lots of interest in the T56 Magnum it seems. Sounds like a group buy to me :)

jocko124 06-01-2011 04:11 PM

Thanks for all of your input Gents. Pulled the trigger on a close ratio T-56 Magnum from Hurst Drivelines today.

Good call. I just swapped mine and got some miles on it for the first time today. Thanks to the .63 overdrive I now have a usable 6th gear with 3.73s.

If you ever need tech support make sure to get a hold Jim at Hurst Drivelines. He is a wealth of knowledge and knows every little facet of how to install and operate a t-56.

Matt

6D9 Matt 06-01-2011 09:28 PM

Do you happen to have Jim's email at Hurst Drivelines? I have some questions about my swap. I am going to be converting a 700R4 to a T56 Magnum. Just wondering what kind of quotes Im going to get for that, etc. Thanks!

Id be in... lets get this going! :unibrow:

Swiftshifter68 06-06-2011 03:42 PM

The "Trans' with shifter" price I've found was $2795 with Free Shipping in the lower 48 States. Is there a better deal to be found for the same package? I've already got a Ram Street Dual, scored it off of Ebay for $500, N.I.B. (I know! :wow: ) My Richmond is in nice shape, I just don't wanna' find out the hard way that it isn't up to snuff, I'll park the car for 6 months, pissed, I can just tell.

6D9 Matt 06-07-2011 09:22 AM

Im gonna need the "Elite" kit (as Hurst Drivelines calls it) bc Im going from an auto (700R4) to a manual (wanting the T-56 Magnum). I got a quote from Keisler last week for something around $4,800. Got a few more emails out to other people, but sounds like Hurst gives you a very accurate kit for this conversion for a great price, so hoping to talk with Jim on the phone in the next month or so.

Devil Dog 06-07-2011 10:30 PM

Hurst Drivelines

I went with Hurst Drivelines for my TKO-600 and also purchased the optional Black Jack Shifter for a perfect fit in the stock location.
Plus, I've always been faithful to the Hurst name products.

NvrDun71 06-09-2011 09:07 AM

So which site supporting vendor wants to step up with a T56 Magnum GP? :lateral:

BBC71Nova 06-09-2011 10:19 AM

And preferably fairly soon :).

Jim@Hurst-driveline has the best deal going so far that I've found at 2795 w/free shipping. Good prices on bells as well. I just gotta round up some money:mad:

jocko124 06-10-2011 02:47 PM

Just spoke to Tony Edler @ Hurst. I think he's working on something for us!

BBC71Nova 06-10-2011 03:44 PM

That's good news about Hurst. Great bunch of guys over there it seems. I was likely buying from them anyway based on the great service. Hopefully they'll join up here so we can get some of their knowledge in some of these conversion threads.

Got my Magnum from Hurst Driveline Conversions a week ago--got the entire kit (driveshaft, clutch, bellhousing, etc). Wonderful folks to deal with thus far!!

Doug

6D9 Matt 06-15-2011 09:46 AM

If I have a center console (as seen below) with the 4-gauge pod, will this console still be able to be used after I swap in the T56 Magnum? Or will the new trans and tunnel modifications move the shifter back too far?

jocko124 06-15-2011 02:51 PM

Got a note from Tony @ Hurst Drivelines saying that they are working out the numbers for the group buy...so just a little longer!

Ron in SoCal 06-15-2011 03:08 PM
