64 Chevelle 2-Door Wagon LS-300 Project
I recently sold my 62 Chevy II and have begun my next car.
64 Chevelle Wagon, 2 Door! Its a "300" wagon, with the "LS" engine, hence the LS-300 lol Picked up a SUPER solid and complete unrestored car to start with, its gonna be nice to start with a solid car and not have to patch and make everything for a change! Only rust is in the front floor pans, few dings and dents but thats no biggie. I'm in the process of collection up parts now to start working on it. So the plans are so far, LS engine, Carburated, LQ4 short block, CNC LS3 heads, not sure of cam specs yet. Overdrive trans, prolly a 2004R, but still have not got that yet. Moser 9" ford, 3:90 gear Full air ride suspension I picked up all the suspension from a guy, had less than 500 miles on it all E3 ride pro system strong arm front control arms shockwaves front hotchkis front and rear sway bars hotckis steering arms delphi 600 power steering box air ride rear lower control arms and bags hotchkis dbl adj upper arms Planning to run 17" and 18" wheels I want to run air conditioning on this one too Black mountain precision front drive system on the engine Thats where I am at so far, not sure what all is available for the LS engines since I'm new to them. Same as brakes? I need to get dropped spindles and all the brakes. -Gary Heres some pics.... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/IMAG0183.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/100_0870.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/100_0869.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/100_0867.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/100_0868.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/100_0861.jpg |

Little bit of an update, pics to follow soon.
Got the front floor pans replaced (only rust on the car to patch!!) countersunk the tail lights flush with the body cut out the dash, in the process now of grafting in a 62-65 Chevy II dash Got something in the works with the rear bumper... I drew up some engine adapters and had em laser cut so now the engine/trans is set in for mock up and I got some headers Guys at Scoggin Dickey came thru with all the goodies for me to put together a very stout 416 Stroker motor! Should move the grocery getter down the road pretty well! Still working on ideas to get rid of that ugly gas fill door, and something different for door handles. I'm heading down to Goodguys Columbus to see what kinda deals I can find down there and I can start moving foward with some of the other stuff, steering, brakes, air cond, etc. -Gary |
Nice project!

Welcome Gary,
You gotta love those 2 door wagons...I love 'em so much I cut up my '67 4 door wagon to MAKE a 2 door wagon out of it... Sounds like you got a great start on a cool PT wagon...Keep the updates and pics coming... Rick |
Rick
Post up some pictures of your 67 short wagon, looks cool! |
I love long roofs! I've got a '64 two-door wagon we're working on in our spare time (not very much of it though), we're just torn on which direction to take it and how far to take it! Sounds like you have a good plan, look forward to seeing the updates!
|
Gary – Cool project! Thanks for including Hotchkis in your list. We love the wagons! What color are you going to paint it?
|
Wow thats a trio of great cars in that picture. That Chevy II is beautiful, you did an awesome job. My first car was a 66 SS so that tells you how much I like that one.
Your new project is going to be a sweet ride when your done. I love the 2 door wagons. |
Heres a pic of my other 2 projects too, dont laugh at me!
The yellow 69 is a cruiser/beater. The other one, volksrod, is about 6 diff years, been tinkering around with it. And more importantly, the wagon pics... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...d/DSC03176.jpg Floors patched http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03181.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03183.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03190.jpg Starting the nova Dash http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03199.jpg Flush fitting the Tail lights http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03191.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03192.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03195.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03198.jpg mock up engine set in place with a 2004R trans http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03200.jpg |

Its been Christmas in July with all the parts coming for it! Not much to really update till I get everything in and can start putting it together. Few things I got for it now... 4 wheel 4 piston wilwood brakes moser 9" rearend radiator 200 4R trans engine parts on the way front drive system for the engine stainless gas tank vintage air flaming river column and a load of misc. stuff -Gary |
Been awhile since anything new... been collecting parts still!
Havent had much time to work on the car, got married recently and refinishing part of my house stopped progress. A friend of mine offered a helping hand since things were hectic for me last few months, and boxed the frame for me and I should be bringing it home to start putting it together and were gonna build some tube xmembers for it and brace it up some. So should have some pictures soon of it, otherwise it looks like a shelf right now!:( -Gary |
Got the suspension on and mocked up today. Its low... should be cool! The front crossmember is sitting on the ground when you put some weight on it, might end up putting some sort of bump stops on it?
Next gotta get the body back on the frame and start building the tube x-members and make all the engine and trans mounts! I will probably end up notching the rear floor slightly for the upper rear control arms and to gain a little extra exhaust room. You can see the frame all boxed in, the rear control arm brackets boxed and a support brace/tube for the upper rear arms. Finally some pics... -Gary Also, the big Hotchkiss sway bar didnt fit the factory bracket holes, so we welded a plate to the bottom and drilled and tapped to 3/8" bolts. Using the original front hole location and moving the back ones location. AND you can see how much I had to cut out of the spring pockets for the shockwaves to have enough clearance not to rub! http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03686.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03691.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03692.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03688.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03684.jpg |
Nice! What are the plans for the frame...paint or powdercoat?
|
Very nice,I think the 2 door wagon's are way cool.Awesome fab.work.
|
Killer project! I'm really getting into these wagons recently, the kids are outgrowing the Camaro.
|
Very neat ....I love the longroofs .. I have 65 chevelle 2dr wagon myself, has a bumper to bumper chassiworks eliminator chassi with a 4-link, fab-9, and aftermarket front suspension with rack and pinion. I also have a 66 chevyII wagon converted to 2-door with long 2-door sedan doors on it.
Any plans for the interior or exterior yet ....? |
Thanks for comments!
Got the body back on the frame over the weekend, need to set the engine/trans in next and start building mounts, crossmembers and x-members in frame. Hopefully have that done by the weekend, or at least close! -Gary http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03698.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03697.jpg |

I am going to shave the drip rails, fill the cowl louvers, remove door handles, trim/emblems, I countersunk the tail lights, putting a 67 nova rear bumper on it, move the gas fill. And am planning on painting it brown... yes... brown lol. -Gary |

Car looks good keep plugging away...it wont build itself thats fo sho!!! |
Engine mocked up, I made 3 different style adapter plates, the set in the pic is what I went with. And than my buddy made up some frame mounts for me. Also bolted up the accessory drive system from Black Mountain Precision.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/photo122.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/photo124.jpg Started cutting up the nova dash and making some new panels for it... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/photo125.jpg Another pic of it http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/photo123.jpg |
Hey Gary, nice project. Looks like we're almost neighbors...Davison area here.
Who's headers are you using? I just picked up a very solid 65 HT to do a LS swap in. Been shopping for headers that have good clearance as I want a pretty low ride height too. Thanks, we'll have to meet up someday! |
Well been cutting up the nova dash some more and made the panels and have it fit pretty good now, got the vintage air unit mounted, havent finished the dash yet cuz I have some more stuff to do under it, make mounts for the coils and fuse panel, etc.
Also finished up my tail lights today, turned out nice, I love em flush, nobody will probably ever notice LOL! I stuck a set of 17x8 smoothies I had on my daily driver on it to get an idea of fitment. Anyways, time for some pics! -Gary http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03707.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03708.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03712.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03711.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03709.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...Door/photo.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo2.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03714.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03715.jpg Here are all the different engine adapter plates I made, I went with the one all the way on the left, then my buddy (SteveMarsa on here) made some mount for the chassis, placed them right in the middle of the front crossmember. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03706.jpg |
Very Cool.Are the 2 door wagon's rare.

Havent had any pics that look any different right now, all the little stuff I was doing, havent had time to work on it for the past couple months though.
The belt drive system is from Black Mountain Precision outta CA. -Gary |
So haven't posted in awhile. Had some down time but got back on the car and getting quite a bit done. Finishing up metal work, than going to the media blaster to come home for more metal work lol. SteveMarsa came over and we bent up and made a tubular k-member for the frame, new trans mount etc. so the engine and trans mounts are all done now also.
Figured I post a few pics of what I have gotten done recently. -Gary So heres couple pics of the kmember and trans mount http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/kmember.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ansxmember.jpg 62 nova dash, just have to finish the column hole, the console you see is actually a gas tank cover/seat pan off an old kawasaki... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo1b.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo1a.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/photo1bb.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo1c.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo1d.jpg pretty aluminum driveshaft http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/photo2-1.jpg |
firewall all done, smoothed, steering is all done too
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo8.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo21.jpg 67 nova rear bumper, widened it, extended the sides also to wrap further around and reshaped quarter panels to match the bumper, made some new bumper brackets, also smoothed the tailgaite and removed the original license plate recess in it and the rear pan http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo7.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo6.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo11.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo10.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo9.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo3.jpg |
cut out and raised the spare tire well so it no longer extends past bottom of the quarter panel, will be the new home for the battery
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo13.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo14.jpg new door handles, work really well http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...oor/photo4.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo15.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo19.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo18.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo20.jpg still finishing up the gas tank, was going to put the fill behind the license plate but changed my mind, figured this was cooler. flip out tail light with the fill cap behind it, this pic is just mocked up, i'm currently finishing this all up. Also I frenched, or flush fit the tail lights http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...r/DSC03715.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b1...or/photo22.jpg |
Does anyone know if they make an LED conversion for 64-65 el camino station wagon tail lights? I have seen some universal led boards that i could make work possibly, curious if there is anything else out there?
-Gary |
