Breakin the Mold on Lat-G!
This is a short story about a build not too familar in these parts. Due to some internet peer pressure, I feel somewhat obligated to post my experience - thanks Ron! It’s not a 1st gen fbody classic parked in a barn for the last 30yrs or a bone stock ChevyII with 20k on the clock driven by someone's grandma destined for magazine stardom. This is as simple as it gets.
4th gen '01 SS Camaro, 15k on the odometer, black, 6spd, t-tops, leather, etc. Bought the car in '01 with 4k on it, damn near stole it from a dealer in northern Michigan and the affair began.... Because I can't leave things alone, its first stop was Lingenfelter for a H/C set-up and 3pc Simmons wheels which kept me entertained for awhile. Drove it for a couple years until the novelty wore off. Wanting more, I tore it apart. Literally. Making room for a new bullet and cosmetic upgrades....sold everything that was bolted on. Unfortunately, life got in the way and it sat......for 5 years. Here she is in '01... http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w291/lpe403/ss.jpg Here she is in '05 http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...3/motorout.jpg Fast forward to fall of 2010. My lovely bride says, “So are you going to finish that thing?” “Would like to”, I say. She says, “well do it right”. And so it began…… Enter Virginia Speed. Told Shawn, “I’d like a LS2 440 that makes XXXhp with street manners. And while we’re talking, there’s this guy on LS1tech that built a RHS 460 (Steve Rupp) for his 1st gen…..what’s the damage on one of those? “ We talked for a couple weeks until we decided the prescription for this build required 460 inches with a sheet metal intake by Marcella to let those cubes breath! “Street manners, Shawn?”….”Absolutely”, he says. |
Shawn's work....
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-12-11023.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-12-11022.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-12-11021.jpg Future intake (at that time....Marcella :hail: ) http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w.../marcella2.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w.../marcella3.jpg |
5 months into the Intake build....tbody combo (measuring 120mm :omg: ) was not going to work unless this car functioned at idle and WOT.......true to build intent of "street", it wasnt going to work!
Short block complete topped off with the baddest set of LS heads in existance (thanks Cary)...FYI, Mast C5R heads (1 of 5 sets ever built), Marcella out....who or what could provide the breathing capacity to support these lungs? http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-18-10001.jpghttp://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-18-10002.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-18-10004.jpghttp://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...2-18-10005.jpg |

So with a combo of TD, JE, Lunati and Callies components topped off with the goodies above, we get this....

Need to stop, right? 800hp is not going to stop by taking the foot of the pedal. Thanks GM for the CTS-V swap :D Tweaked of course with CF decals ;)

Quick update on the 460...
Shawn turned the key with out any real tuning parameters to make sure things worked, fat A/F, no timing, etc. Managed 700hp.........................................at 5500 :D Per his quote in my sig, "car is gonna be silly". http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...d/10-11-11.jpg |

Cant put a bullet this pretty between ugly fenders (which 4th gens are NOTORIOUS for) soooooooooo, clean them up!
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1299.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1298.jpg A little lead to fill in the shock tower reinforcements, some scratch'n, paint and BAM! http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1322.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1321.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1343.jpg |
Core support needed a facelift too. Some unused holes, notches to accomodate the Firebird headlamps, etc needed to go.
Weld, smooth and straighten :D http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1300.jpghttp://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1306.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/2-23-111.jpghttp://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...p/IMG_1342.jpg |
I need your wife to talk to my wife!

Kidding! Nice to see something "different" on the site (AKA not 1st gen haha) and great attention to detail. |
Hey was just busting your balls in Rons thread, thanks for posting. I'm sending this to my buddy right now who is also knees deep in a 4th gen build.
How are you going to address cooling in this thing and how would that motor run with lesser heads and say a Fast LSXR 102 intake?? |
Quote:
Running these cubes with smaller heads and a Fast in my opinion doesn't make too much sense as they would both choke the potential and purpose of the larger displacement. I decided that if went this big, it would be an optimized combo top to bottom. I can't remember what Steve Rupp's Bad Penny put down, but would be a good example of the configuration you're referring to. As far as cooling goes, Meziere pump (obviously) and BeCool radiator (polished of course ;) ). Still thinking about another fan(s).... http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...ts/BECool3.jpg |
Few more details....
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...blingbling.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...0509-00162.jpg Hydrocoating.... http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMG_1749.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMG_1748.jpg http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w...s/IMG_1746.jpg |
Awesome work! Subscribed! You are one lucky guy to have a wife like that :unibrow:

I think Rupp made 720 on the engine dyno. That is pretty damn good IMO. |
Quote:
If we're only talking about power numbers, yes, generally speaking 720 is a great number for a 427 and conservative number for a 460. Combo wise if better heads and an intake made 820 then......does having a "460" become more of a conversation piece? Just sayin...:D |
Great thread Brent. Thanks for posting. ?(Although, I had read most of it on ls1tech months back.) That is a killer build. Keep us posted on it.
Seeing posts like this make me want to build the heck out of my super clean, super low mileage 4th gen! Oh, and yes. That car is going to be "silly"! |
Awesome build. Thats going to be one wild ride..!
|
I've checked out your threads on ls1tech before. Hopefully I run into you in person and get to check it out once it's done. I'm on the west side of MI, but I try and get to most of the bigger events that are semi local.
Fikse owes you a commission. After seeing your wheels on ls1tech I placed my order. 12 weeks ago now and still waiting... But it should be worth it. |
Incredible build so far. I can't wait to see some more.
|
Quote:
No kidding on the wheels!! Maybe a sponsorship or something  |
Oh...that thing will never run....:D

Car is looking sick - love the intake/motor build..
Your not the only one that's breaking the mold here... hahah. |

Performance UPDATE: These are few and far between, but fun when they come around. Shawn may have under estimated all the air this intake is capable of in combo with those monster heads. Still working out some baseline tuning parameters so he can get a good handle on how much more cam to put into this thing. At the minute we're in the .24X/.25X - .650 range. Still on the conservative side given the cubes, so the next one has to be bigger by at least 10deg on both sides :unibrow: Anyway, was able to bump the rpm up, threw some timing in and cleaned up the A/F a little. 770 @ 6200 :_paranoid Its gonna get really fun here in the next couple weeks... |
