Chevelle Frame Rail Narrowing
Ok, I have searched and read every thread on this subject. However, I could not see where anyone stated just how much was gained. What I am looking for is just how much you can gain from reducing the width of the frame rail itself. This is not narrowing the rails to create a four link drag race type setup. I am looking to add a larger tire in the rear. I'm set on a minimum of a 19" wheel, and my understanding is that I can get a 10" width under the well without any modification.
I have even thought of going full force and ordering these and grafting them in. http://autoweldchassis.com/spec.ivnu these are 3" tube that are supposed to fit under a stock body according to the company. I am at the place where i need to make this decision so I can either move to the next step or stat cutting the frame. Thanks in advance, HEEP |
Check out Scott Mocks 66 Chevelle build thread on here. Go to page 13, post 125. He narrowed his stock rear frame, and looks to have 315's back there. Actually he's got those tires on all 4 corners!
How wide do you want to go? I'm running 10" wheels out back, and I'm sure I could do an 11" with cut or rolled fenders, and the perfect back spacing. |
You have a 68-72 car right? On my 67 i gained an inch and a half by reducing the width, but the earlier models frame is slightly different.

this is a better solution. http://abcperformance.net/mini%20tub%20kit.html |
Vince, I've looked into his kit. He is just now finalizing his build on the 70 models. He has the 66-67 taken care of. I just sent another email to him to see where he stands.
Might have to buy myself a late Christmas present. I checked out Mr. Mocks Chevelle. That is the ABC kit installed. I'm ready to start cutting , I guess after I brace everything first. HEEP |

I had a few floating around here....well the mock up picture was taken 5 years ago and it sucks. I'll have to make a project thread since we have started working on it again. Just got it back from the media blasters and should have the sheet metal back on it in April. Stretched 1 1/2" using new quarters fitting 315's on 11" wide rims and a 5 1/2" back space.
I figured I would see if it would work since I have to put new quarters on it anyways. Plus narrowing the frame and mini tubs is very time consuming job. Body sits on 1/2" spacers and the front is "Z"ed 1 1/2" up. |
Vince,
Love the stance. That thing is low. What are you running for suspension? Coilovers or Bags? So my understanding is that you are stetching the wheel openings 1-1/2"? HEEP |
Hope to get set up with coil overs with in house custom mounts. The quarters are stretched 1 1/2" on each side over stock. Looks very subtle. At least it did when we did the mock up. We will see how it looks with paint on it.
I might take a bit out of the frame since its off anyways for boxing and the z mod. |
it doesnt look like you stretched it at all! I plan on doing this along with the frame narrowing i already have. any more pics of the stretch process?
