new Silverado ticking on cold start
I've got a new 2012 Silverado HD2500 with a 6.0L gas engine. It ticks for a few seconds on cold startup. The colder the worse. Does anyone know if this is normal? Hard to believe out of a new vehicle.

no, i'd bring it into the dealership. how many miles? does it sound like internal engine or could it be a belt noise?
|
Take video or audio of it and post up. Mileage on truck also please. Could be a bad lifter or afm lifter if u have dod. I can check for tsbs when I get back to work after lunch.

Sounds like an internal lifter noise. Truck has 500 miles on it.

Check the oil level. Sounds simple, but!!!!!! My Dad's 07 has done this since new. When he first heard it he checked the oil and it was off the stick. In the end it used more than 3 quarts of oil in 3500 miles. He had an ongoing battle with GM about it. They kept trying to fix it kept burning oil. Here is a short list, new valve covers, new oil baffles, new breather parts, new valve guides and seals, and finally all new pistons and rings. Before he got to the pistons and rings he contacted a lemon law lawyer and got a settlement. He did not get a new truck because he did not report the issue soon enough. My advise is get it to the garage and get on record asap. They did the pistons and rings while his case was in progress. This seems to have mostly solved the issue. I can not tell how much of a pain it was to deal with. His truck is an 07 and he just got finished with the issue last summer. 4 Years! Good Luck!

Oil level is good. edit: how can I tell if my truck has fuel management. It's a 2500HD, I didn't think they had this feature.

http://www.chevrolet.com/2012-silver...owertrain.html Also if you have a DIC, you can switch it unitl it displays the V8/V4 mode and it will tell you as you're driving which mode you're in. |
Bring it in to the dealer. Have em look at it. I have had a few bad lifters in new trucks. LY6 engine does not have afm. If is a 2500hd most likely LY6. Could also be bad oil pump or incorrectly installed oring. I am a heavy line tech for gm dealer and seen all these problems. Also u mentioned ur truck is a '12 model. Being we are now on the '13 there is a possibility ur truck has been sittin on the lot for a while. A simple oil change may solve the problem.

Does anyone know if the newer engines had anything done to solve the piston slap issue the earlier engines had? All three of my gen 3 engines do it, don't know if it's still an issue with newer engines.

:faint: My apologies, thanks for setting it straight. |
i belive that is an l96 motor.gm came out with a pip4978e bullitin for tick noise cold start.have had some oil pump problems built between 4/01/11 through 11/1/11.it is a lifter noise, but not a lifter problem.they have seen it on low milage motors.came out in feb 16 2012.hope that helps.IF that is the problem, the dealer would have to replace the oil pump. thx drew.

My 2012 does the same thing. Dealer said they could do nothing about it. I figure when it finally blows up I will know what the real problem is.

I have an 08 1/2 ton (5.3)with 130000 miles on it, great truck,no problems but I've always had lifter noise at cold start up, at this point I think it's just a characteristic of the LS engines.
