"RAMPAGE" - 2nd Gen Camaro by Roadster Shop

Well, this thread is well overdue!

We had a pretty hard time keeping this one under wraps for so long!

This was a labor of love for many of us here at the shop. With many of our builds previously circling around the show car, street machine, pro-tour type builds, this car would be a complete departure from what we had done before. It would also serve as a platform to apply new methods of 'building', incorporating new technologies and methodologies into what we could apply to other areas of our builds.

The brief was really to create an evolution of the pro-touring methodology, bridging the gap between street car and full blown race car. A 'perfect storm' of Roadster Shop design, detail and engineering and an open love letter to the spectacle and rawness of motor sports, racing, muscle cars and the pursuit of speed.

While some of you are aware of how the car ended up, we should probably start from the beginning...

The perfect candidate:

Prepping the shell.

***Those of a 'sensitive nature', ignore the next sentence***

This body was amazingly solid. Probably one of the cleanest we have had.

With the shell being prepped, we started to dig into what we really wanted the car to look like.

Wide. Definitely wide. And low. Did I mention wide?
This was the first loose sketch of the 'feel' of the car. 2nd one at the bottom, more of an exploration as to how different a direction we were heading form the stock shell.

Looks somewhat 'normal' with this setup. We don't want normal...

You will have to put a wide load sign too roll on the street

preston 11-13-2014 05:03 PM

Its just started and I am already in love with this thread. Yes, I actually want to marry it. Spare us no details of the build please. (And what is the full track width anyway ? 78" ?)

waynieZ 11-13-2014 06:13 PM

I can't wait to see more.

DBasher 11-13-2014 08:00 PM

Is this a customer (GoPro) car or a design exercise for the shop? Either way I love it and can't wait to watch it come together!

Dan

Rick D 11-13-2014 09:02 PM

Oh yeah, already loving it!! But you knew that already :D

imsa fiero 11-14-2014 09:09 AM

Lets see the front suspension and the Penske shocks

GEN_X 11-14-2014 09:45 AM

This had to be a great excersise in your ability to trust your design. I cant imagine saying "well this is one of the best shells we have ever had. Now lets cut it up and make it really wide" Great job guys!!

I don't want to ruin this for you, but this car was debuted at SEMA. Now they are pulling the curtain back to see what went into the build.

Maybe I should have said "was" instead of "is". I've seen the finished product and am looking forward to the build pictures and details as they lay it out.

79" outside of tire to outside of tire. (did I mention it was wide?)

It was actually a project we started independently as a shop project. In the fairly early stages, one of our customers we have built for before was talking about wanting a more hardcore, track based project that was still streetable. Something with a good level of detail and uniqueness, but not so precious or something he would panic about if he got a rock chip.

Well put. This was a pretty big 'leap of faith' from what we thought would be an awesome idea to the reality of making it. There isn't exactly a ton of reference when you build a GT/DTM/ALMS style 2nd Gen custom widebody race car! It was pretty much when we had the tire up next to the body sticking way out past the quarters we knew we were onto something.

And who did the rendering and concept design?

It was around this point we decided on matching the cantilever rear suspension style with an inboard cantilever on the front also.

How do you build those frame rails and crossmembers? Are they 4 pieces welded together or solid tubing mandrel bent or...?

Us too!

We will be starting with 1:1 on the cantilevers and dialing in the correct ratios as we tune the car.
