57 plymouth car in tulsa
1 Attachment(s)
as some of you know the 57 plymouth that was burried in tulsa in front of the
courthouse in 1957 in a time capsule . was to be unearthed friday , well they opened the case today . it is 1/4 full of water , the water line has been as high as 3/4 full . but the car still is inside the plastic bag and still covered in grease , they wont open the bag till friday so we will see how bad the car is then . |
Man that really sucks I wanted to see this thing in perfect condition.
maybe it will only be bad on the bottom half of the car the rest of the car will look good. If the interior got water then its probably got some nasty mold on it. |
Man its not looking good.
Looks like the bag might of torn over the years. |
Keep us posted.
|
i read somplace that the crypt was originally designed to be able to withstand a nuclear fallout...apparently it wasnt designed to hold out water though?
|
Looks like they probably would have been better off leaving it in a corn field....oh well, it was a valiant effort.
|
The last few images here show the car pulled out of the ground and put on the truck for delivery to the ceremony. (still in the bag, but interesting nonetheless)

can you say...."RUST BUCKET"
Very sad... could have been cool.. |

|
There's a bunch of very good pics of it after its unveiling here:

the winner shoulda done an ebay mystery auction before it was dug up, cuz right now i see a nice low mileage 392 hemi core motor and ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ummmmmmmmmmmmm, ummmmmmmmm thats all.
sorry...just looked at pics.... dont even have a hemi |
Here are some clear pics.

i know it would be really expensive, but a full restoration on that could bring a nice price when completed right? i mean, it would be expensive to do that, but it has the historical aspect to it and its also an extremely low milage engine
|
woul dbe cool what it looked like after a good steam cleaning bath
|
well it actually dosent look too bad i bet it isnt rusted very bad at all
i bet it would clean up decent and would be very good platform to restore - just water damaged - |
When a Ferrari is 1/3 the price after being under water for a day, well.....
50 years or so entombed in a extremely humid environment has wreeked extreme damage. I say leave it and put it on display. |
Come on... I say roll down the windows, drive it through the car wash a few times and bring it to Barret Jackson with all its documentaion and "original mud" !
Honestly... thats such a real shame ! Good intensions, but bad planning ! |
dam thats the worst outcome ever....what a shame.
|
You know guys... if you really look at it, I don't think there is much rust. It just looks to be filthy! Maybe there wasn't any air in there? No air, no oxydation... I dunno, but it sure doesn't look rusty to me. I sure wouldn't expect to be able to find shiny chrome on a bumper like that.
Can't wait to see pics after someone gets it with a pressure washer! Shiny Side Up! Bill |
IMO, they're getting MUCH more media coverage/buzz on the internet because of the condition of the car. If it would have come out of the ground in decent condition, it would have been in the news for a few hours then forgotten. It will be interesting to see what comes of it.
|
I think the car isn't in that bad of condition.
There couldn't have been much air in the vault to aid in the rusting. |
The story says that the local 1957 resident or his or her heirs of Tulsa who guessed the cities 2007 population would win the car and its contents. I wonder if there was a clause stating whether or not they get it as is or if they will clean it up and restore it for them..... imagine the excitment of winning and then being present to see this unearthed ?
They also say that BC and crew would be there to attempt to start the car for the first time in 50 years. Can you see him anywhere near that dirty car ? That would be worth the price of admission alone for me ! |

Actually, there is... the rolliing of the ocean infuses air into the water. More importantly, it infuses oxygen into the water, oxygen being what is needed for rust. However, it isn't rust that does the most damage to the ships, but instead it's the creatures. This is why the confederate sub was in such good shape, the thing filled with mud, and most of the oxygen was kept out of the sub. Hence, a lot of items were still in the sub when it was dug up, including skeletons, clothing, and leather items. Shiny Side Up! Bill |
Theres a link on another car site that shows a news posting of this car being sent to Coddingtons to get it running now sure if it is to be restored just that it will be going there and will be aired on there show in the fall http://home.businesswire.com/portal/...85&newsLang=en

The easiest way to restore the time capsule car would be to:
1: Find and purchase the nicest 57 belvedere to be found in existence today 2: Remove and dispose of one of the plastic valve stem caps 3: Remove one 1957 plastic valve stem cap from the time capsule car, which should still be in reasonable shape. 4: Install time capsule car's 1957 valve stem cap onto car found in item #1 5: Sweep remains of time capsule car into a hole, plant tree over site as a tribute. |
Take a look at the place that may be doing the restoration (the missbelvedere.com link). Is that the coolest rust removal process or what?! They say they have been using it for years on bridges.
Fabled rusty car might go east URL: http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/artic..._A1_hANew20470 Synopsis of story: The once-buried Belvedere may be going on a road trip. This article was published on tulsaworld.com on 7/19/2007. |

Here it is http://www.safestrustremover.com/ Looks interesting. You can actually buy it by the gallon. Wonder how it works? |
they also did one with the prototype plymouth prowler but welded it shut in a metal box and they had to move it couple years later.
|
You know, if you take the time to really look at the pictures, the car isn't really all that bad. It should, you would think, have rust holes half way up the doors, 1/4s, fenders, etc, but it doesn't. In fact, if you look, there is still paint in these areas! If there is paint, there is metal. Hell, the front bumper even SHINES where the crud was wiped off. By all rights, it should be a glob of peeling chrome, not shiny.

As a 57-59 Mopar enthusiast and as someone who seen the car in person, that car is beyond saving. You could remove some of the trim and use it, but the metal has been eaten at from both sides and all the metal would have to be replaced. When they opened the trunk, the inner structure fell down leaving the skin on its own. You could poke a screw in the quarter and drag it to the other end without any problem. The best thing anyone could do is just try to preserve whats there. Josh |
I've seen worst...going far east as in China for scrap metal. Even trade for all the garbage they sell to us...Nice try Heraldo, nice 2nd chance...did they try playing oldies music and put it next to a nerd with glasses yet?...end of joke rant. :willy:
