Tire Size Question

I apologize if this is out there somewhere but I couldn't find it.

I need help on what the largest tire is that will fit on a factory stance 68 SS 396 car. If you could please provide the height and width.......also will a 15x10 fit back there and if so what's the backspace needed to do so. Also need recommendations on what the backspace is if I use a 15x5 on the front.

Thanks for any help offered..........but I'm new to the first gen scene. :o

15X8" with 5" b.s. and 275/60-15 is the largest we could fit on a friends 69 without rubbing. A 10" wheel will physically fit but the tire will rub unless the car sits up in the rear and is never allowed to come down.

i have 17x9.5 with 4.5 BS with 275/40

it fits really well... See pic below.

I'm pretty sure Jody is right, if you want a 15x10.

Most the guys here run 17/18's. You can run a 9.5" wide wheel with those because the sidewall on the tire is much narrower as compared to the bulge that a 15" tire has. If you're aiming at handling I'd consider the 17/18's over the 15's

Eric remind him of the lower shock plate issue that you had just in case...

I am planning on running some 18's later but not until I can get the mini tub kit...........until then I'm gonna just make it look like a hot rod with some decent meats in the back and somewhat skinny on the front........more or less like a straight line car..........

Once I have the mini tub, I'll lower it and put the wheels that I want on it.

The 67-8 cars are a little more forgiving, on the outside, than our 69s due to the round wheelwells (less likely to have contact at the top of the wheel opening...)

haha, ahhhhh yes... those were the days huh?

If you are running monoleaf springs... big tires wont work... period.

You will need multileaf springs and multileaf perches. Works like a charm :)

Well I'll consider myself lucky for once..........it's got the multileaf in it. :D

The combo I had on my 68 was a 15x8 (5" backspace) with a 275/60-15. It was the biggest I could put in there and get the car to sit right. I ran 15x6(3.5" backspace) up front with 215/60-15.
