My new AFR heads

I just thought I would pass along my AFR experience.I received my Afr heads along with all my other engine parts on Saturday.Being so overwhelmed with all the parts I didn't get to inspect every part. When I got home and went through all my parts, I realized there was something wrong with the heads. It looked like somebody took a grinder to the front of each head(it is deep so a simple polish wont fix it,it needs to be milled).I called my AFR dealer and he said that they only machine them so far so you won't have a problem mounting your accessories.I decided i would call AFR myself to whats really going on.
I called AFR Monday morning and asked to speak with somebody in customer service.I got a customer service rep named Jason and explained my situation.I told him it was going on a high dollar car that needed to look good and these heads just didn't look very good.He replied with we do not care about how they look we build them for racing and power.I said well I have seen other people run your heads and none looked like these. He replied with "well the big block heads and ls1 heads have a different casting".I said that I have seen SBC AFR heads that look better heck I have never seen this poor of work on any head.I said to him so your telling me I'm screwed? He said this "We know its a problem and we are going to address it in the future but not anytime soon"(so they admit the product isn't up to par).He then went on to say that the only thing he could do for me was too have me go to a dealer and trade them! I replied that no dealer is going to trade me a better looking set and he agreed,go figure. So I said so there is nothing your going to do,he replied with there nothing I can do.I told him I wont be running your product then, his reply was okay.
That's my story just wanted to vent.http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-6/1033619/de8f.jpg

Wow man, that sucks so bad, I wouldn't expect that from such a high caliber product as AFR. It's also sad because I don't know of many other head manufacturers that make such good heads as AFR, compared with flow numbers and the massive 76cc combustion chamber size available.

Anywho, if you really don't want to use those heads, I might consider taking them off your hands for the same price you paid if they're the right ones i need and if you wish to purchase new ones. 220 cc intake cnc ported? 76 cc combustion chamber? I don't mind the look of my heads up front, i might even be painting them black to match the engine anywho :) anyways, give a hollar! i'd more than love to help you out here

I know a lot of guys will think you're off center for wanting the heads to look as nice as they perform, but I know that your plans for the car are huge with a significant investment. It would be nice if the heads didn't look like someone made them in their garage.

If you don't want to mill them, I highly doubt you'll have a hard time selling them.

Russ, they are the 210 76cc heads and I have not decided what I am going to do.

Scott, they sure do look like they were done in somebodys garage.I can't imagine AFR using those heads in one fo there add's.Maybe I am being a little picky but they could have not been so rude.Anyway life goes on,no big deal :D

I don't know about your consumer laws over there ut here in Sweden a company would not live long giving a customer that kind of reply.

We have a consumer law that require the seller to take any product back within a week if it is not up to the customers expectations. Of course within reason.

Don't you have something that you can press the producer/seller with besides a lawsuit?

I thought we already discussed this?

Jonny, take a deep breath, eat a few pancakes and get the Brodix's. :D

Jk man. It's a bummer, but as Scott said, you should have no problem selling them, plus you probably won't have to wait months for what ever brand you decide on replacing them with.

LOL good one Bill!!To be honest Im not really worried if I can sell them or not.I just was shocked with they reply I got from there customer service.Had I been treated like a valued customer I would have not been so pissed.

 Wow..Thats really wrong!

I have AFR 210's on the elky,a bad "Dull Finish" but have been some of
the best heads i have used..Though they are for a small-block.

Here is a shot of Herb' Lumps 66 Elky's new BB AFR heads! His elky is so
cool i had to post this,he had a small problem with the heads..here is his
Heads and the posted trouble that came up..Though not a finishing problem
but could be a good tip for big block AFR head guys.

*From Herb Lumps site:*

"Here's the latest since I got the engine running.... I found out that the intake pushrods were rubbing on the holes in the head.I called AFR and apparently when you use shaft rockers on their heads the intake pushrod holes need to be clearanced. It was nice of them to tell me that after I assembled and ran the engine.Fortunately I didn't get a chance to run the engine much and was able to provide the needed clearance for the pushrods without too much trouble."

He also said that the new AFR's are "wider" than
stock BB heads..so you should want to check things for clearance,it was
a issue for herb.

Buy the way...

All of you guys should check out Herb Lumps 66 El Camino Website!
Some cool info on his new Rat 468 Big-Block and some bitchin new parts!
Though i wish he was running a nice EFI system on his new build. :unibrow:

I hope AFR will be a stand up company that it should be about your
trouble there jonny51. Its not the products..but the people who sell
and stand behind them, after all those boys over at Brodix are doing
there home-work. :hail:

Good Luck!

Well one fix would be to make head plates for the fronts of the heads. you could even have them powdered in some color. Like what I did on my LS1 heads. Pretty easy to do and would let you both run the heads and cover up the AFR name that I am sure you don't want to advertise.

Just an idea.

Sorry for the bad customer service and I will keep it in mind...

is it possible to turn that head around to be facing the firewall?

That sucks about your heads man, i didnt have any issues when i got mine :willy:
