70-72 Chevelle Mini Tub
 

Im thinking about mini tubbing my 1972 chevelle.

I know you can fit an 11in wheel under the back without a mini tub but i want to go wider, 12 maybe 13in in the rear.

Can anyone help me with some info as far as what it would take to make it happen.

1. Does anyone make a tub well (like a dse)

2. Do need to narrow the frame.

3. Do need to narrow the rear end.

4. Do i need to narrow the gas tank.

5. If i decide to go with a shop roughly how many hours would it take for a shop to do the job.

Any other info you guys have to add about a mini tub for my chevelle would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know of a company that makes them but im sure they must be out there, from what i understand you have to do some pretty serious frame notching to make room..

atleast if you want to retain the oem frame... then you are limited to notching the frame "to the seam" .. the wheels just need more offset to pull the inner lip inwards.

if you want alot more, then you are propably best off getting an aftermarket frame, if you retain the stock one you will have a couple of grand into both the front and rear suspension, some into strengthening and boxing the stock one to get close to what an art morrisson frame with 3 link and c6 front suspension can do....

I went stock frame with my g body (simmillar frame, but narrower) and it wasnt cheap to remove, blast, modify, paint and install suspension (ats spindles, GW front controllarms, currie rear arms, wattslink, moser rear, varishocks etc... and its still a stock frame limiting how low i can get the car, how wode tires i can run etc.. but its up to you in the end

2. Depends on how wide of a tire/wheel you want.
3. No, but wheels with that much backspacing won't look good.
4. Maybe, depends on if you move the framerails in.
5. I did mine, but didn't keep track.

I just did my 72 442 (has the same wheelhouses as the Chevelle) and I couldnt find anyone that makes a kit for them. What I did was buy a set of replacement inner wheelhouses and cut the stock ones out leaving 2" of them still in the car and cut the new ones to fit(gained 2") and welded them together. I also had to notch the frame alot to get the added clearance. The only problem with doing it this way is the wheelhouses are rounded in the corner so it will not allow you to run a really tall tire. I didnt care about height so it wasnt a big deal to me. I have a set of 345-40-17 on 17x12 wheels.

jhiphopjunky, I'm with you on the wide wheel under these cars. Been poking around the forums trying to gather info for my car. Really I thought I would want more but a 11" wide looks pretty sick. Here was a pic posted on one of my threads 70' Chevelle largest rear tire/wheel combo ????


I saw your wheels for sale, did you sale them already?

DSE doesn't offer a mini tub kit. It can be done, but takes a lot of work. More than a standard Camaro/Nova install.

We have done a couple of them. To fit 335s / 345s...............

1. Does anyone make a tub well (like a dse) now, add a 3" strip

2. Do need to narrow the frame. Yes, about 6" to be safe

3. Do need to narrow the rear end. No but if you want a deep lip wheel, yes you will narrow the rear. We have all the math available

4. Do i need to narrow the gas tank. No

5. If i decide to go with a shop roughly how many hours would it take for a shop to do the job. It requires a aftermarket coil over conversion and crossmember, we use a QA1 kit. Finished and ready to paint, about 100 hours

Frank- wow that sounds like some major fab work at 100 hours. Do u have any pics you can post of any of the chevelles you mini tubbed?

like others have said, the tubs on a 70-72 are about even with the frame. that means that both have to be worked. but really, a 305 or 315 will fit with little to no work, or a ton like mine (depending on how much you want it lowered and how tall of a tire).
