bodywork on my 68

hey guys, i am looking for a little help. i have my car sanded all down and so now it is a multicolored/bare metal/bondo.... i want to prime it so i can see better just what im working with.is this a misstep or should i do it? im not a painter [as im sure you all know by this message] and i know that most if not all of this primer will be sanded off.also, i hear guys talking about filler primer, epoxy primer,etc.... what do i need?

you should seal the bare metal in epoxy primer. then if you want instead of doing the filler work on that, you could spray some polyester primer over that. block it out and see what you need.

do you mean just spot prime the bare metal places with the epoxy or go on and shoot the whole car? if im following you right, all my blocking should be done on polyester primer...right?

sorry I thought it was all bare metal. I would just spray the whole car with a good polyester primer, and start blocking.

is the polyester primer preferred b/c it sands good or what other factors may there be?

I like to use featherfill on most of my cars. Polyester primers are high build, and most of them sand easy. Keep in mind that just because it says high build that doesn't mean it will fill a dent. After you prime make sure you use a guide coat to show the low and high spots. While you are sanding don't press down hard, you do not want to distort the metal while you sand.

thanks man, im kinda on the right track i guess. what do you use for the guide coat?

I like the 3M dry guide coat.

I epoxy prime first than use Slick Sand polyester primer to block it out followed by epoxy or urethane primer. I use old left over paint reduced a lot for a guide coat.

Thats alot of material on top of the old paint.
