Whining noise? I'm stumped.
Lq9 motor, with TKO600, New clutch and hydraulic throwout bearing.
Put it all together and started hearing a whining noise. It is loudest when idling. I took off the serpentine belt, still had the noise. I replaced the throw out bearing and noise with first test run. I also took out a spacer for the throwout bearing. I push in the clutch still makes the noise? pilot bearing looked fine? I'm Stumped! |
Whining as in a squeeling noise? If so I had the same problem and it ended up being the pilot bearing.

Maybe you could let it idle in gear on jackstands to see if the noise goes away. Good way to isolate the pilot bearing.

More like a squeeling noise
Thinking out loud and with all of your input, I think it must be the pilot bearing. It was new when I did the swap.
After I replaced my throwout bearing I put a little grease on the end of the transmission shaft. I believe it quieted down the pilot but the noise is coming back. The tranny is coming back out :) I'm not sure what I did to damage it? I used a heavy duty one but not sure of the name. I had to damage it on the install. Hey did I mention the car rip's!!! It's a LQ9 I bought from Jody with his mods, heads, cam, etc. I put it into my 69 firebird. Fun as heck to drive and it just rip's!!1:thumbsup: |

Chased down a 'whistling' noise in a motor install for a buddy..... after they'd put in a new GM grate engine. He hadn't hooked up the PCV on one of those SBC with the retro looking EFI Chevrolet put out.... and at idle the thing had a horrible whistling sound. They'd even gone so far as to take the tranny out TWICE.... and all it (the vacuum connection on the motor) needed was a simple hose. :D

I haven't got it dyno'd yet. I took it to synergy to get dyno'd but my car needed some work and I had a new clutch. They put a tune on it and gave me a list of things to get completed.
I need to break in the clutch and then take it back for the dyno tune. I completed the list. Now the car runs good. I didn't pack my pilot bearing with grease when I first put it in. It started squealing right after I got back from getting it tuned. I drove it and the squealing began. Thinking it was the throwout, I took it apart and put a little white lithium grease on the trans shaft end. I then drove it and the noise stopped but started to return just not as loud. Hardly drove it, just around the block and 2 mile around town loop. Almost every time I took off the car just wants to burn out!!!!!!! My gut feeling tells me it's the pilot. I can't work on until it wednesday due to work.:( |
Every time I go out in the garage mine makes a whining noise also and the car is still on blocks and never been started. I believe the noise is originating somewhere from deep within my belly!
