detroit speed ls1 gas tank?
http://www.detroitspeed.com/1967-196...fuel-tnks.html
i have heard horror stories about ricks tank and rock auto ... doesnt seem that many people are running DS's tank.... any advise... i have a 69 camaro, dropping ls1/6 speed/ hoping for 400+whp |
I'm running the rock auto spectra tank with a 5.3 LS putting 333hp to the rear wheels and have had zero issues.

I'm running a rick's tank in 69 camaro with LS1/T56 406rwhp. It's narrowed, notched, and has the check balls added to the pickup assy. Had it about a year and 4000 mi. The only problem I have is the fuel gauge doesnt work most of the time. They sent me another, different style, at no charge. That one doesnt work either. Fit, finish, and function have been top notch. Not sure if others have had any trouble with the gauge. Scott

Pretty sure DS is just a re-branded rock valley tank. Rock auto, which is NOT rock valley, sold the spectra tanks that have had the most issues. The typical ricks or rock valley tank have issues with starvation because of a lack of good baffling but lots of people run them ok.

The float system just acts like a rheostat in the circuit... but if you're ground side is bad - then you're going to have a hit or miss system. If you've undercoated the car - and then have rubber in between the hanger straps etc - and haven't run a ground strap to the tank - that could be an issue... You don't want to rely on a braided hose to carry the ground... |
dse and ricks have had a simliar issue with venting, but not with starvation. Spectra premium has had starvation issues. New vaporworx tank by ricks and soon by dse solve all issues but there is a cost that goes with them.

I too figured it was a ground problem. However, after multiple tests, switching grounds around, trying another guage, etc... I finally ran a strand of wire from the neg bat terminal to the tank-- still same thing. I fill up and gauge still reads 1/4 tank. 2 days later it goes to 3/4 or maybe even full. 100 miles later its still on 3/4. I have gotten so used to using the trip meter that I harly even look at the gauge. After running out of gas in Tennesee on the powertour I don't know I'll ever trust it again. I even took the sending unit out of the tank & hooked it up- works the gauge prefectly when i move the float by hand. I think the issure is by having all the baffling in the tank, the float arm can only be so long or it his the baffling. The short float arm does not seem to work as well as the longet ones found in most production tanks. At least thats what conclusion I have come to on my own. I am no expert or rocket scientist... if you have any other ideas I'm open to them. Or maybe I just ended up with 2 bad sending units.

The short arm / float just might be the issue... since you've checked your circuit. I'm out of ideas.
