Rear Coilover question
 

Hi guys

I have been looking at installing some coilovers on the rear of my 70 Chevelle and was curious about the kits that are bolt in and re-use the original shock area vs. the weld-in kits.

I i'd like the ease of bolt in but I am a little nervous about all that pressure being put on that small area at the edge of the spring hat where the original shock goes. Any issues of it breaking?

We use a 3/16" plate to help distribute the load, so the bracket will not "rip" through the stock mount. The stock mount is quite thick and more than capable of the job (unless you have a rusted frame). We've been doing this for years on other models and I've never seen one break.

Thanks for the reply, my frame is pretty decent despite being a pacific northwest car. I was just curious if that had ever been a issue for people. I was looking into the ridetech kit specifically as well.

The Ridetech kit is a nice setup, and I think will work well for you. They have proven setups that are great for street cars and also that can perform on the track. We are also a RideTech dealer, so feel free to give us a call with questions or pricing. :thumbsup:

Here is my setup so far:

Front suspension:

Speedtech UCA/LCA

Stock spindles w/Moog Ball Joints

QA1 Coilovers

Hotchkiss front sway bar (too big will change when possible)

new bushings throughout

Rear Suspension:

GM 12 bolt

UMI Boxed LCA

Spohn Adjustable upper LCA

Moog stock springs w/crappy KYB gas-adjusts

stock sway bar

new bushings throughout.

I am finally ditching the rally's and oversized tires that came with the car for some NewGen Anarchy's and Nitto 555's and would like to be able to adjust the ride height as needed, as well as have at least a single adjustable shock in the rear. I was talking to a friend about the coilover kits and he voiced some concern that was in my original post. I'm just trying to do some homework and figure out what works best. The price for the coilover only kits seems to be about the same between ridetech/speedtech/chassiworks.

All of them are great choices, but since you have SpeedTech components up front, it seems natural to get their kit for the rear. :cheers:

I installed a Speedtech rear kit on an A-Body a couple months ago and was very happy with the fit and quality on the kit. I would run it again in a heart beat. Speed Tech coil over kit with the Ridetech coil overs gets my vote.

I have looked at their kit and thought that they only sold QA1 coilovers for their rear coilover kit?
