Anyone take apart a Flaming River tilt column?
 

With my car being a 68, quite a few of the parts are one year only. I decided to use the original steering column brackets but I had to weld the bracket to the column. When I welded it on, I tried to be careful and cool it down right away, but it started smoking. I want to pull the column apart and make sure that I didn't melt the wiring or anything. Has anyone pulled one of the columns apart before and is there anything that I need to watch for before I attempt it? Thanks in advance.
