Best Gear Ratio
Looking for the best all around Ration for Street and Some Track days.
68 camaro LS3 480 Cam, T56 6 speed from early 90's camaro switched over to LS style. 335/30r18 Rear tire. Currie 9" Housing 31 Spline 3.70? 3.89? |
Jay - Is the T56 a close or wide ratio?
I just installed 3:73's in my Camaro with a close ratio T56 and 26.6" tire and it's about perfect. I was really leaning toward 3:55's and I'm glad I didn't go that route. Play with your gear/rpm/mph here: www.tremec.com/calculadora.php |
I just bought the Magnum 2.66, but I had the overdrives changed to .74 and .50.
My thinking was I should have a similar motor rpm as new corvette at 70mph, about 1500. The 2.66 should give me a little more first gear (than the 2.97). So with a 335/30/18 I'll be at 1650 or so rpm's at 70 mph with a 3.70 rearend ratio. I hope I got it right! |
I run a (or should say I ran) a 3:73 in a Ford 9" in my Nomad -- with a 700r4 -- and it was PERFECT but that had rather small diameter tires at 25.6"
The Mustang runs a 3:89 rear but only a 4 speed.... so that's no comparison. Can't beat a 3:70 for all around good gear ratio IMHO.... or you could run a 4:30 like my little '32.... LOL Nothing like a good gear in a short wheelbase lightweight car! Yippppeeeeeeeeee |
Its a short ration 2.66 First Gear. Thanks guys for the info. Time to spend some money...:G-Dub: Wife is going to be so happy

The 2.66 first gear is the CLOSE ratio version.
Close ratio means you will have less rpm drop when shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and so on. |
