Does anyone know who offers an A6 for PT Cars, or who is working on one??
To All:
Does anyone know who offers an A6 for PT Cars, or who is working on one?? I appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks, tyoneal |
I am sure it only a matter of time before GM's 6L80E becomes more readily available and somebody figures out the programming involved.

I spoke with Mark Bowler last week. Bowler Transmissions has two products that make a true auto six speed manumatic a reality using an existing four speed auto and a gear vendors overdrive:
1) Modified Valve Body: Provides full engine braking when the gear selector is in the "3" position. This product is still undergoing transmission durability testing. But you can "hear" it in action in this video. Engine Braking Valve Body Mods 2) GV Interface Electronics: Mark has electronics that will actuate both the transmission shift solenoids AND the gear splitter from the same switching mechanism such as my paddle shifter. This is technically an eight speed transmission when the gear selector is in the OD position. However there is no engine braking in this mode. |
Steve:
Thanks for the great information. I'm really hoping they can put a "Bullet Proof" package together. It would be great to have the choice of having an automatic, OR a "Manual" transmission in the same car. With the Shrifter Technology, can it be used to create an, "Inline" shifting transmission, without having to spend 20k on a Tranny? I think that is the right term, however if it isn't, I am refering to the Manual Transmission that to shift to a higher gear you pull the stick back towards you and to downshift you push the shift lever towards the front of the car. Also, can the Shrifter be set up to use one paddle? (Pull back to shift up, pushing forward to shift down) Thanks for you input, I'm excited to seeing what types of Transmission choices are on the horizon for our PT Cars. If you hear anything further, please feel free to post it. I really think products like yours will be a big part of the Sports Cars of the future. tyoneal |

I hope your right. A six speed, "Manumatic", would be a blast to play with, and when you were stuck in traffic, you could engage the Automatic mode, turn on the radio, and just relax instead of having to fight with a stick. tyoneal |

It will be many years before you see any forward progress made with regards to mechatronic manuals or the adaptation of clutch to clutch automatics. The hardware is within sight, but it's difficult to package the electronics (software and programming) into a marketable product. |
Isn't the 6L80E a gigantic trans? I know the 4L is big(Lots of customers are using this trans and have heard lots of PITA stories about mounting such a big trans.)
What about weight? I would think the size and weight (and cost) would keep this tranny in the relm of truck/towing applications, as there are a lot of options already available for us. Just thinkin' out loud while the coffee kicks in........ |
The 6L80E is an entirely different animal. So despite being a six speed, it is actually compact. The 4L80E is a big doggie. But it does fit in most of our muscle car applications with little to no mods. And it is big for a reason. I'll gladly sacrifice weight and parasitic loss in the name of reliability and function.

6l80e
Craig,
The 6L80E is offered in the 2006-7 Corvette as well as the SUV's, so there can't be too much of a weight penalty. Steve, Have you heard any "new" news regarding retrofitting the 6L80E into non-stock applications? Maybe SEMA will provide some information on that. Nick |
Thanks for the info. I guess the coffee hadn't kicked in......
