RX-7 Build up

It's been a while since I posted here, but my rotary motor is complete and the car is near running again. Just thought I'd show ya'll some progress along the way.

I have made a blog to journal my progress and it can be found here... http://www.87rx7.blogspot.com/

No r26b? You *****! Jk, nice build. I've always wanted a FC, but the prices around here are ridiculous! $3000 for a NA with blown apex seals!!

stylEmon 02-28-2007 05:54 PM

ya, i like my 13b thanks.

My brother just sold his NA FC for 800 with blown a water seal. My buddy found a runnning NA for 50 BUCKS! and parted it out.

mine was about 4k running. You can find tons of cheap FC (turbo or na) if you dont mind building it yourself.

ripped out the old interior this weekend. Time for cleaning, then I'll install the new black interior.

Wankel!

Felix Wankel - My Hero

It's unbelievable how simple those engines are. In my IC engines class in college our Professor showed a picture and parts list of a normal reciprocating overhead valve engine and a wankel rotary. It's crazy how few parts they have.

My prof. actually did some research for John Deere on the shapes of the combustion chambers in the rotors. I'm not sure what John Deere would use one for, but cool nonetheless.

Update us with some HP/weight ratios when you get it done!

Good Luck,

Brandon

thanks for the commnet brandon.

yeah, good ol' Dr Wankel. I beleive there is 3 moving parts inside the motor.
I've found that for some reason, mazda leaves the oil passages on these motors WAY TOO small. It is so constricting, that is strains the motor once you start to mod them. There are a few right angle turns in the passages as well. I've had this motor's oil passages completely re-engineered. not only have they been widened, some have been blocked off, and re-routed to ensure more oil, and more free-flowing passages.

I beleive piston engines had a problem with oil passages at on point. To remedy the problem, they did something very similar to what we've done with my rotary.

I'll hook yall up with numbers as soon as I get em.
As far as wieght, I am expecting somewhere around 2300 lbs. I am not gonna keep the interior gutted, I am only switching to a nicer trim. I'll do what I can for weight reduction, but I can't sacrifice style.

Nice build. But the weight of the 2nd gen is about 2826 pounds. Even if you strip it you might be able to get it to 2500lbs, but you have to strip the heck out of it, and since you're not, it's not going to be that light, but they are still lighter then most cars. I used to race the first gen for years, great cars when set up properly. Good luck on the build.

stylEmon 03-05-2007 06:58 PM

hey mazspeed. those first gens are damn light huh?!

You're right, It'll probobly be more like 24-2500 lbs. I have done some wieght reduction, but it isn't a huge priority for me. Like you said, the cars are pretty light already.

I've got BBS rims. They are much lighter than stock.
Ditching the spare tire, lightening the suspension a little.
I'll ditch probobly about half the insulation under the rugs. (a friend took out insultaion, carpet, and sound deadening. About 40 lbs total)
Ditched power steering, cruise, removed LOTS under the hood (emmissions, extra BS),
lightened flywheel
relocate battery, better wieght distribution

It doesn't add up to a ton, but I think 2500 would be pretty easy to obtain.

Did yall run turbo set-ups on the FB?
