It's called a swarm. While it was because a hive was damaged in this case, it usually happens when the hive gets too crowded. A new queen is "made" and she takes 1/2 of the bees with her and goes off in search of a new place to build a nest. When swarming, most bee species are pretty harmless, and will only sting if you really provoke them.
