It's called a swarm. While it was because a hive was damaged in this case, it usually happens when the hive gets too crowded. A new queen is "made" and she takes 1/2 of the bees with her and goes off in search of a new place to build a nest. When swarming, most bee species are pretty harmless, and will only sting if you really provoke them.

honda boys have too much time on there hands. can of hair spray and a lighter makes a nice blow torch.
