Or is it that the end of the spring is making it's way into a step in the frame? because those can vary, and the conical springs tend to have a smaller wire that can get cought in a small pocket, I would get correct conventional springs and shocks for the application.
It somehow popped into the spring bucket previously--probably when I put the full weight of the car against it on the ground--but when it did so, it wasn't lined up (or bottomed out against the "step" or indent) against the indent in the upper spring bucket--so it rotated some--by at least and inch or more. Now, as I go to reinstall spring, I cannot get it to butt up against this indent---it's almost as if the spring is to small to fit it in there correctly--it is close--but not close enough. It's the right spring and shock for the app.
