Default Gotmy clock cleaned by a Firehawk.....

Was test driving the 69 Camaro yesterday with my GM tech buddy who had the Tech II plugged into the LS1 to watch my shift points and lock up action. He was advising me the importance of putting it in D not OD when horsing around and that I should manually hold in 1, 2, 3, when "drag racing" or performance driving from a stop.

The car is running out strong but the Ford 9" gave it up the more I "tested" the acceleration capacity of this highly modified LS1.

Then, we were stopped at the light when a SLP prepared late model Transam pulled up next to us. I slid it down to 1 and edged forward to let him know I was interested in some action. He answered back with a quick nose bob. Light cycled green and I nailed it.

The Camaro launch rather nice considering the Goodyear EMT tires don't do much for traction. I laid into it and pulled way from the firehawk. Before I knew it I had topped out 1st gear and was on the rev limiter. The tach was bouncing back and fourth. My brain froze for a second. I was expecting it to shift (I forgot I had pulled it into L1). Then I realized what I was doing and popped it into L2, but by now the firehawk caught me. Hit L2, lit the back end up and was on the rev limiter again before I could blink. My buddy Kurt is laughing SO hard, I thought he was going to fall out of the car. Heck, I should have reached across and pushed him out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, got next to the firehawk and gave him a nod and wave. Dang, did I feel stupid! Oh well...............Got my clock cleaned the VERY first time I tried. Oh, and you should have heard how much worse that Ford 9" was groaning after that! I think it has to be audible outside of the car at this point.

I have never owned a car with an auto trans that can whiz up that tight, that fast to redline. This is going to take some getting use to, but I like it!

Now, if I can only get out my 69 aka "Killer" Vette and go hunt that dude down for a rematch!

Default Leave it in D

My 98 SS would actually run more consistent in D (in it's early mod-stages). I reprogrammed the shift points and wala'- a tenth better each time.

Steve- you're shrifter has me looking to adapt a 4L60E to my old Poncho. For now, I'm stuck with a (although not so bad) 200 4R. Oh well; all you 5-million aftermarket SBC and BBC (and now LSx) guys enjoy the fact that you have so many ready-to-go parts available!

Thanks. We'll be here when you're ready.

Shifting automatically with a computer controlled trans works great under ideal circumstances: straight line acceleration with 100% TPS and zero wheelspin. But under all other scenarios--where part throttle comes into play as a result of compensating for wheelspin, or road racing--the brain will generally out shift the computer.
