Nice video and good commentary as usual. The car doesn't do boo for me. Needs more power, IMO.

I agree.

The car is partially legendary as it is the GT, which had the 390 4spd. Putting "suspension tweaks" and a 315HP 4.6 in it would be like having the 68 with a straight six and adding sport shocks and a hotter cam. Big whoop. Making a special green and white GT500, now we are talking about honoring what is legendary.

I was (note WAS) a die-hard blue blood until Ford went mod motor and Chevy introduced what I consider the Ford-inspired LS engines. Now, I am pretty much a trade-coat cuz GM just gets it and Ford just, well, doesn't anymore. Ford had their hayday with the 5.0L craze, but Chevy is really putting out the performance when you look at crate offerings and frankly, the Z06. I was NEVER a Vette guy until the C6 Z06, but, wow.

And the Ford mantra about affordable power is getting old. Live axle rear ends to stay cheap???? sorry, got off on a rant. Back to your normally scheduled program

I know what you're saying about the mod motors. I just finished building a real nice 400 hp 302 that will be going back in my lightweight 1985 Mustang LX coupe. My second project however is going to be a g-Machine. I'm doing either the 1984 or 1982 GT rollers that I have and putting a 1999 Cobra engine and trans in. I'm rebuilding the bottom end and putting in some stage 2 cams and ditching the fuel injection for a 750 Demon carb. I'm going for clean and a mix of old and new. There's a huge difference in cost between 5.0 engine parts and 4.6 DOHC parts. 1 cam for a 302 - $325....4 cams for a 4.6 $1200! Rotating assembly isn't really that much different in cost. A set of assembled heads new can go well over $2000! BUT, I just love the sound of those cammers and I think in the end if I'm creative with my money, go with take off parts and work with my machinist I can make the same 400 hp my 302 makes for not much more money. But I agree, $6500+ for a 4.6 DOHC Mach 1 motor with 320 hp?????!!!!!! I can get a 302 GT40 crate motor making 320 for atleast $2k less.

On a side note though - a Z06 motor isn't "chump change" either - $13,600+!!!!!

John, I hear you about the Z06 engine. What I meant is that Ford has this lame-arse excuse for poor design choices as "keeping performance affordable". Yet builds a 4-cam crazy engine design that is quite possibly the largest package they can fit so few cubes into; just dumb. The single cam in block design is compact and works well.

Imagine if Ford, instead, just once pulled its head out of its rear and built a Windsor-based small block that was 9.5" deck, 4.125" bore/4.2" stroke with aluminum block and six bolt caps (basically build the LS engine block with the Windsor deck), took any number of the inline, stock valve angle aftermarket cylinder head designs flowing 320-340cfm, and built a 450 cube small block with a hyd roller cam. Don't even bother with the ti rods like the Z06, which are a waste of money at 6500rpm redlines. That motor would hurdle 500HP/500 torque on the motor. Then, take the transaxle out of the GT, put it in the rear of the Mustang, build a torque tube, set that engine back, etc and frankly more or less copy the Vette with the exception that you would still retain a back seat with the gears behind the diff. I would rather see money spent on that than four cams and an almost 3 foot wide engine. Save money by not dry sumping maybe, tho' I like the idea of a lower engine cg.

You would have a 4-passenger monster, maybe it would cost about the same as the Vette, but isn't the Vette how GM competes in the car enthusiast market? Ford doesn't really compete with that car, they think they do, but they are clueless. The GT doesn't compete with this car cuz it was double the money and not viewed by Joe Public as a daily driver kinda car. Best bang for the buck is pretty much unanimously the Vette from all automotive sources. The Mustang could be just a good (probably not better due to weight of a car that carries four v. two) and for similar money...

I am not going to disagree with most of the points made.
However, I do want to point out that Ford is the only American manufacturer currently offering a Pony musclecar.
For that reason alone Ford deserves some credit.
Furthermore...The success of the Mustang is the primary reason for the rebirth of the Camaro..So you die hard Chevy fans you should be thankful for that. And last but certainly not least I am thankful that the big three will all soon have musclecars on the road again. Competition is healthy and it brings out the best in American muscle
