Default Twist - cowl induction trim plate

Got one for christmas, and was wondering if anyone has had good results with clear coating a brushed aluminum finish. I really dont want to send it out for anodizing. Was hoping for a nice looking cheap alternative, before mounting it and watching it slowly oxidize. If anyone can recommend a good quality aresol spray can in clear, Im all ears. Any suggestions?

Thanks Rich- BTW nice machining Steve

The problem with painting aluminum is it needs to be primed with a zinc based primer for the paint to adhere to it properly. I don't know of a zinc based primmer that is clear. Your best bet would be to have it powdercoated clear. From my experiences the minimum $$ on powdercoat is cheaper than the minimum $$ on anodizing.

Steve does have some nice products.

Well right or wrong I gave it a shot, literally with U-pol clear, I think its a pretty decent quality clear coat(18 bucks a can). Sanded the top surface with 320 very lightly and wiped it down with solvent and put a couple heavy coats on it. It looks great, don't know if it will last but will give it a try.

Steve- I would pay extra if these beautiful billet pieces were clear anodized -

That looks great. The cowl area is not a source of high heat so it should hold up well. If you applied only one or two light coats, then no yellowing should occur.

We are able to powder coat on request. We've had good success selling bare, brushed finish parts as they are so easy to touch up with just a little scotchbrite. The clear powdercoat, on the other hand, can not be freshened. And many enthusiasts prefer to take batches of parts to their local powdercoaters in order to get consistent finish throughout the vehicle.

On the other hand, cowl induction trim plates are hard to touch up since access is limited after installation. We are strongly considering the application of clear coat to these and other parts that are under development. If the feature does not add significantly to the price, we'll pull the trigger.

Thanks for the feedback
