edp coated panels

what is the proper starting point (ie, paper grit) to sand an edp coated panel to get it ready for blocking and priming? Thanks

I strip the coating off and start with epoxy primer, maybe overkill but maybe someone will chime in with other ideas, good luck

E-coating is very good stuff.
At our shop we try not to sand thru the e-coating before we give the new parts a coat of epoxy.
Just sand it with fine sandpaper.

I've wondered about this too. I'll be replacing some panels soon. I've read where a couple guys didn't trust that the factories making replacement sheet metal were doing a thorough job of keeping the metal clean before coating them. That the primer is good but if there's anything under it that's gonna cause problems later. But I don't know of any instances where someone painted over it and had problems. Anyone ever had that happen?

so basically start with 1000, and lightly sand it, then epoxy it? sounds good. o too have wondered if the ecoat was really prepped right, but also haven't heard of any problems, thanks guys!

We follow the same steps but use DTM primer.. Scuff primer with 80 grit & then start our body filler work
