Default Freak Mode Cool Garage Door Mod!

I must be insane! Trying to get my workshop all set up. It has a standard 16'x7' two car garage door. The problem is the ceiling (plywood instead of drywall) is about a foot lower than normal.

I am sick and tired of having to carry a key to come and go from the shop, but was told there was NO way a power garage door opener could be installed. Yah...right!

So, after some planning and the purchase of a super cool Genie screw drive, the project was launched.

I built bracing in the attic and mounted the opener between the trusses. I then cut a slit in the ceiling for the arm to run. At the light unit I traced the light cover and cut an opening for that. Wrapped up the rough install last night.

When you are in the garage you don't see anything but the slit in the ceiling. The light drops down like a standard fixture. Push the button...and it opens smooth and nearly silent!

I am going to finish it up by stapling cardboard across the trusses and putting putting the insulation back on top of that and run some 1x3 trim boards to frame out the slit. Other than that...it is just plain cool!

Oh, BTW...my wife and 1 year old son have been out of town this whole last week. I have been virtually non-stop getting some projects knocked out in their absence.

One was to rebuild the air handler box.

Two was to clean and paint the house garage as well as decorate with my favorite framed auto art. I wrapped that up on Halloween. It looks awesome out there.

Taking care of a child saftey fence by the pool tonight and they get back in town on Friday.

I love it when I'm left alone as well.
