Default BelAir Rendering

I would like to hear what you think of that rendering.
I watched American HotRod on Discovery Channel and I was inspired by the Junkyard Dog project. They took from a junkyard 1956 Chevy 2dr and turned it into a beautiful hotrod.
But I like 1957 Chevy Belair 4dr Sedan and made a hotrod rendering of it.
I've got to post the rendering yesterday but my internet coonection broke and today I saw that beutiful BelAir, Kris Horton has designed
So it's a good posibility for me to compare the two renderings and I also expect your constructive criticism about my work

George,

I'll happily add some constructive criticism. You're using a different medium than me, so take anything I say with a grain of salt. (Are you using Illustrator or Photoshop?)

It looks like you're off to a pretty good start, but the first thing that jumped out at me was the perspective of the picture. It's pretty inconsistent throughout, which takes away from the realism. Your work paths could be a lot more fluid as well. There seem to be a lot of sharp edges (i.e. around the edge of the windshield.)

Also, the tan insert on the rear quarter looks off center with the rest of the car. It seems to almost be above the side trim.

I'll take another look at it in the morning and see if I can offer up any more advice.

Kris

Hey George,

Looks like you have some talent. I'm going to build off Kris' comments:

Good points:
Bold color choice and has a lot of visual impact
Details sell a rendering and it looks like you spent a lot of time on the chrome
You have most of the building blocks as far as photoshop tricks
I applaud your bravery in attempting to do an exaggerated perspective

Things to work on:
1. Perspective is off - things that are farthest away are smaller (compare front blinkers)
2. Very warped proportions-looks very heavy in the center and inverted by the tail, it appears too rounded overall
3.Bodyside molding would either be straight or slightly curved the other way from this perspective, the tan inset, as Kris pointed out, would be higher.
4.Make sure the perspective is dead-nuts before doing anything else. It's like building a house with a crooked foundation if you don't. Paper overlay sketches are the best way to make adjustments. No matter how well you render or throw in cool effects like lens flares, it will still look off.
5. Use smoother transitioning selector tools. The polygonal lasso tool gives you very jagged areas (reflection on upward facing surface of bumper). Use the bezier (pen) tool and Paths to select an area to render.

Anyway, I'm sure the other artists will have more to say. There are a lot of good things going on and only a few details to work out. Overall, pretty impressed and keep working at it. I'm 27 now and I've been doing it literally since I was 4 without instruction so you can't rush it. If you haven't already, buy "How to draw cars like a Pro" by Thom Taylor.

Good luck and keep posting your work, we love to see progress!

Ben

Nice to see soem drawings on here and Being an Artist of the same kind of work Designing race cars hot rods and customs aswell its alwys good to see drawings and how people develop, First off when starting any ilustration or project as such its is always important to establish your own style not to copy other peoples, ths drawinghas WAY to many design similiarties as Chris's and you have to do your home work and practice a ton to estblis and work on the craft of awesome design and with that said that part is so overlooked it isnt about just drawing the cars its about designing them and doing unique one off peices! and as for Chris's car great look to the rendering the illustrator and photoshop look is nice , but the car designed i have actually seen built! let me look i just may have a photo of it thanks guys keep up the good work George owner GP Graphic Deigns

Thank you very much about the important notes you've all made.
I've watched Scot Robertson's "How to draw cars" and "Basic Perspectives" but unfortunatelly the perspective still is my biggest problem.
I first draw the contours of the car by hand on a sheet of paper and then colored with Photoshop.
I'm working on the perspective all the time, but really without professional instructions the progress is a bit slow. But I'm going to keep working.
I started to draw cars about 7 years ago and this is a very short time to become even closer to a professional especially without professional help.
So it's too early to talk about my own style. I've downloaded thousands of pictures of g-machines, hotrods and muscle cars just to see how they look like. What is the main design of these cars and what peple like.
I really don't like wings in the back or in the front of the car, air intake holes on the sides of the car and anything that changes tha basic shape of the car. If I can say it that way - I like "clean" shapes of a car.
Thank you very much again and I hope when I post the next picture there would be less notes
