Rust Remover?

I posted this over at PT.com and wanted to hear from you guys as well. I've done a search on the internet, but came up with the phone book all claiming their product is the "BEST". Anyone have practical experience with a rust removal product. I need to spuce up a Ford 9"....

The various possibilities really depend on how much preparation work you want to do to the surface, wether or not you are disassembling the housing, and what type of finish quality level you seek to achieve in the finished piece.

Its a bare 9" housing thats out of the car, so whatever prep work that needs to be done... I'm spraying it gloss black so I want it to look nice, its not a show car, but don't want an ugly black 9" back there either. Sandblasting is my last resort since I don't have one close by me....

wire wheel on a grinder amd a little one in a die grinder or drill if you dont have air.. throw in a little hand operated wire brush for good measure

I agree with the wire wheel, plus maybe sandpaper on parts that aren't greasy. If the prep is done right, you can prime and paint like other parts. I have used Picklex 20 as a rust converter on top of bare metal, followed by Zero Rust with good results, although some will say to never use these cure all rust coatings. My purpose is to not use them in lieu of good prep work and necessary metal removal, but to protect against surface rust and prevent rust from forming.

In November issue of Camaro Performers, They had a tech article on a Spicing up a v6 Camaro with exhaust and pretty much all new suspension components. The rear end was completely covered in rust. They used this: http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/p...ProductID=1130
It came out looking really good after painting it.
They note that the aerosol version of this product might be a better idea than the brush on. This might be opposite is you have more rust.

I have used the Eastwood product in the past that Gotham mentioned and it is good stuff. Follow with a coat of Eastwood Chassis Black and you are done.

Since your rearend housing is bare, and out of the car...that is a great opportunity to get the housing really clean...are you SURE that there aren't any blasting services around?

POR-15 is also really good stuff, they now make it in a satin black. nearly indestructible finish, when properly applied.

Yeah, I've checked around and the only place near by is sooo busy and expensive its not worth going to for a small part like this.... I bought that Safestrustremover.com stuff yesterday so I'll see how it does and post the results... I do plan to spray a good epoxy prime to fill any rust pits, and then POR 15 the thing in Semi... Should look nice when finished..
