Default 3-Link Question

I remember reading somewhere here on the Forum that the typical stock car 3-link does not work well for use on a road course. If I remember correctly it doesn't transfer weight properly with both right and left turns. I recall someone saying that the link off the pumpkin should be offset to one side as apposed to directly in the center.

Anyone remember why this theory holds water? I am putting the rear suspension back together and at this point could offset to one side or the other if it will make a significant difference.

I appreciate your help,

Aron

The reason some guys will run the 3rd link to one side or the other is for bite. On my Outlaw latemodel I run my 3rd link as far to the left as possible because it helps make bite off the corner by planting the LR tire much harder. Alot of chassis builders have actually made the 3rd link mount on the chassis wider to accomplish this. By moving it to one side it makes bite because it will have more leverage and a larger affect on the tire that it is nearest.

So Tony, if I want it to make right and left turns equally then I should leave it in the center the way it is set up now?
I have been reading a chassis engineering book and I think I am getting things set up right. I have some old buddies who were stock car guys, I think I will give them a holler and see if they can give some set up advise. The parts are right out of the Lefthander catalog. Thank for your response. Aron

I would run it in the center. The 3rd link really doesnt dictate how well the car turns. It is mainly used for making bite on corner entry and corner exit. This is accomplished by playing with the angle of the 3rd link from front to rear. I would look more into different track bar's and sway bars. The problem with sway bars is you have to make adjustments to them and shocks at the same time. I tryed one on my car and didnt like it. Too much work to get it right. I think you will be better off playing track bar heights and some shocks and springs in the back of the car.
