Default Stock '70 GTO Wheel fitment?

I saw Frank Middleton's Lemans here with the same sizes I want...
17x8 and 17x9.5 with 255/45 front, 315/35 rear tires. The info on the page here does not say what mods,if any were done for clearance.I have seen info that 315s will not fit '70 Chevelles, but the GTO wheelwell might be larger.
The car is a 1 owner so I don't want to cut it,but the 14" wheels have got to go now!!

The 315's on the back of the big A body cars are super short. I know everyone wants to see the larger, wider tire number, but when overall diameter is sacraficed, it doesn't always look right. Especially when you car looks best with a 27" tall rear tire. The 315/35/17 is only 25.7" tall, so from the rear, you have some width, but from the side of the car, you're not filling up the wheel well. Another key note is that a 315/35/17 should really go onto an 11" wide wheel.

What I would do? Bump up to an 18" wheel. Tire sizes are much friendlier for your year and body style and are taller and come in the right widths to fit.
18x9 front, with a 275, and an 18x10 on the back with a 295-305 is a slam dunk. And you won't have to cut up your car to fit an 11 with a 315. The tire heights are there, and available, and your sidewalls won't look super short, and leave you with a huge gap between your tire and your upper fender.

If you need more help, feel free to call, and I can better explain what I'm talking about above.

Hi I'm Frank I got 17x8 tt2's in front with a 4.75 bs and a 255/45-17 nitto, the tire actual measurement on the wheel is 10" across. My rears are 17x9.5 with 5.5 bs and 315/35-17 nitto drag radial. That tire measures 11.25 inches across actual measurment. I then just took the rear wheels and put them on the front and they clear also but my suspension is not close to stock and I have an aggressive allignment. My back has more room might be able to fit a 17x11 and a real 315 tire. My car was also lowered another inch this year to fix the tire height to wheel well. The edge of my rear wheel well is just at the top of the tire and in front about 2" below. I'm selling my fronts and possibly the whole set if intrested let me know.

Wow! Thanks guys!! I will have to start saving up for the 18s. It would be nice to get it right the 1st time for once...usually I end up with wheels or tires that are not quite what I was going for.
