Default bmw= ****

I have to post this here, to let you guys know about an issue a good freind of mine has. He bought a brand new BMW z3 convert. I know chicks car but, that is not the point. Well this car has only been used fro daily driving. has never been tracked or abused. A few weeks ago he was over another freinds house, and found something that took him by surprise.

As you can see the crack on the rear suspension cross member. This inturn started the rear floor pan the start sheering. BMW only gave him $2500 to get it fixed. Here is the kicker, he has to get it done at a cert BMW reapair facility. OK, the reapairs for the damage, from the ****ty design of this car, is going to run over 8k!!!

What I am getting at is this. You thinking about picking one of these up for the wife, daughter, girl freind, or whatever, think twice. This has been an issue with these cars for years, and they refuse to take responsability for this ****ty design.

What year is the car? He should just take it to the dealer that has a collision shop and say here it is fix it! I'm not sure I understand by they gave him $2500 to get it fixed? If this is what it pays in their warranty book then that is what the cert BMW collision shop is going to charge. They CAN NOT charge more than the warranty rate to do the job. If it is out of warranty and the dealer is trying to say that they are giving him $2500 as good will then he should ask for it to be inspected by a certified BMW collision repair center, which would only be at a BMW dealer not an independent shop that does BMW work.

I will check with one of my shops that is a BMW dealer and see what they have to say.

Doesn't look like a brand new car to me. I'd find a good attorney if it is new.

Theres an internal campaign to fix this on the 3-series and I've personally seen two of these. When you say "brand new," when was the car purchased and what model year Z3?

Just did some research and if he's got a Z3, it's over 10 years old now. The Recall he needs to look into is from BMW, not NHTSA, and is SI B41 02 09, dated October, 2009. There's a class-action going on for this problem but it only addresses the E46, MY 1999-2006, "3 series" sedans/convertibles as Class Action vehicles, not the Z3.

Ok first the car is almost 10 years old. what I am getting at is, this should not happen to a car that is JUST street driven normally. It was checked by an BMW cert dealer, and they determined that he could get it fixed with $2500. Even though it is going to be a major repair. Mpozzi, thank you for the info, i will pass it on to him. I am sure he will be happy to see this. I still would sudj you guys not buy crap from BMW considering how this whole situation has been handled by them.

What you (or he) need to look at is where the sub frame bushings bolt into the floor. Usually they'll tear out of the floor when can then break the actual sub frame or connected parts.

Sadly it's a very common problem with the year range car he has. As stated, there is a sub frame re-enforcement recall. We weld these plates in all the time. Just google E46 sub-frame failure.

BMW like every other single car out there have problems, period! Still pretty good cars. I like them because repairing them keeps me employed.
