Default rear axle width?

i'm building a 69 Camaro . I have 18x12 forgelines with 335 tires,6 inch back spacing , was told to go with 55 3/4 inch rear axle width . I have the tires ,wheels and brake rotors mocked under the car and im getting closer to 55.5 inches. does this sound right?want to get this right before I order a really expensive rear.thanks

No two cars are alike, if your getting 55.5 then I'd go with what you have in front of you. We are only talking 1/8" on each side difference. Do you like the way it's sitting?

Not sure if this will help you, but I received this info from DSE awhile back.
Thank you for using our Detroit Speed & Engineering products. On the 69 DSE Camaro we run a 18”x10” wide wheel with a 6.125” backspace and 275/35/R18 tire size. For the rear we run a 18”x12” wide wheel with a 6.125” backspace and a 335/30/R18 tire size however the rear axle has been narrowed to 56.000” from axle flange to axle flange. Currently we normally will run a 18”x12” wide wheel with a 5.500” backspacing and we will narrow the rear axle to 54.750” from axle flange to axle flange for a deeper dish wheel look.

If you have any other questions please let me know.
Thanks.

^ Winner.

I fit a 55.5" on an 18x12/5.5 BS, btw.

DSE specs 54.75 with 5.5 bs as propont said as well. however, every car is a little different and the 69 I just setup I went with 5.75 bs and will probably have to roll the lip just a bit for a little more margin of safety.

Default rear axle width

right now, ive got the car sitting extra low, there is plenty of room between the tire and fender lip, I was more concerned with the tire hitting the inner fender on the outside .about an inch up from the fender lip, the inner fender comes in tword the middle of the car about a half inch. should I worry about contact there?

depends on the type of suspension you plan on running and how many "large" friends you may have in the back.

With suspension on the car the tire usually gets sucked in as you lower it.

On the outer edge we get about 1/4" of clear space during mock up, but when all is said and done we end up with 1/2" of clear room. Can't explain it but it seems to work for us. I always get as much room as I can inside, that will hit the most during articulation.

Example:

I know that's a second gen, but those tires set out at least 3/4 inch further than mine are mocked. maybe ok with the 55 3/4!

I just sold a set of Billet Specialties wheels/tires off my DSE equipped 68 Camaro and I am going to order some ZX3Rs with the same backspacing.

The wheels I sold were 18x9 front 6.125 BS and 18x12 rear with 5.5 BS.

Tires will be Michelin PS2 non run-flats 275/35/18 front and 335/30/18 rear.
