The following pertains to general street use and maximum tire life. The pressure that fills your tires is measured in pounds per square inch. The more square inches of tire the less psi's needed to support the same weight of vehicle. The max psi listed on the side wall being for that tire carrying it's maximum load and if you add up what is listed on all 4 tires you will find it is for quite a bit more than your cars weight. I run 24 psi in the front 22 psi in the rear of my 4500lbs pickup. I arrived at this by using a tread depth gauge and tracking the wear across the tires at each tread groove over several months times. Style of driving will have an effect on the wear pattern and effect your results. For general street crusing I would start around 28 psi front and 26 rear and monitor/adjust as neccesary.
