Default New ignition problem

Ok, here is problem number 9086230 with my car. I had everything ready to go for the show this last weekend. I was taking the car to the gas station in town that has 100 oct. I'm coming up highway 9 in 3rd gear, not really pushing hard, when all of a sudden the tach and engine go to 500rpm and jumps up and down real fast between 0 and 500 or so. I was able to park the car on the side street. I went to start it several times and it would start, but not go above 500 rpms and the tach would go nuts. I let it cool down, started it back up again, and I was able to drive it about 2 miles before it did it again, then I opened the hood and let it cool down, then got in and babyed the car home. I have not started it since. The car sists in the garage, and a stong raw fuel smell is coming out of the car as it sits, and it has some sort of ignition issues. What do you guys think this could be? MSD box? J&S box? The float levels in the carb are a little above half way which is good, what gives?

I'd start with the basics. All connections, coil wire, pull the distributor cap and inspect. Check your fuel pressure. If all checks out then it's time to see if it's the distributor or igntion box. You can run and AC voltage test on your distributor to make sure the pickup(trigger) is within spec. You can also check your coil with an ohm meter. (you will need to find the specs) If you have an MSD they are known for rust inside on the components of the distributor. That should keep you busy and figure out your problem.

Hey Todd, thanks for the info. I don't have the car in the rain at all, but I do wash it from time to time. It's the 6 BTM version. Ill see if I can get my electrical test equipment on it.

From my understanding, rain has nothing to do with it. Humidity, which you have alot of out there.

Actually, where I am, it's not humid at all. below 20 percent most of the time. I don’t think my electrical stuff for home use will work to test my car though.

Any decent multi meter will work. Of course you need it to be acting up. I'd still pop that cap and take a look. Check out the pickup module in the photos http://www.camaros.net/forums/showth...+timing&page=9 You can take your AC voltage reading cranking at your two pin connector at you MSD box. If it checks out then it has to be the box.

I was able to make the car do the same thing again by warming it up, but it bucks so much you cannot get a meter on it, then you get unburnt gasses that collect then pops real loud causing my head to hit the hood. So I won't be doing that again. I think Ill need a pro to figure this out.
