T56 out of a Corvette isn't a good idea. It has no tailshaft housing and will need a fair amount of work to make usable.

Yea dont buy the Corvette T56 as it is a transaxle/rearmounted transmission. Not sure what you'd have to do to make it work. You can get a LT1 style T56 from Fbody or maybe earlier corvettes (92-96). You can also use the fbody/gto LS1 T56 but it requires an adaptor to make it fit on a reg small block chevy.

LS1 T56, using standard Chevy bellhousing and McLeod adapter plate for now, LS1 bellhousing (or equivalent) when you make the switch to LS1.

Do some reading here, it might help: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=98387

^^what he said. I followed his notes and now have an LS1-sourced T56 behind my 350 SBC in my 77 Z28. McLeod adapter, extended pilot bushing, shorter driveshaft were needed. I modified my stock crossmember as well.

Hey Mike, Thanks for posting the link to the swap info. I am about to face the same thing with my '70 Camaro and that site answered a lot of questions for me.
