Default Temp Tags - Private Party Car Sale

I have someone interested in buying a car from me and is traveling in from out of state. If they buy it, they will be driving it back like 13hrs. They have asked me what they should do for license plates for the trip back. I really do not want to leave my plates on it for them.

What is the legitimate way to handle this? Do they need to get in touch with their State DMV for a temporary tag? I think in Indiana we have so many days to switch a tag over from another vehicle, not sure.

If it makes any difference he is coming from NY and and I am in IN.

Any help is appreciated,

Brandon

The correct way to do it is to have them get (or you get) a temporary trip permit. They last for three days in washington. They can get their own in the state they are traveling to when they go deal with inspections or license it. You will need to give them a bill of sale, the signed title and file your sellers report if your state requires it. That last one is important because it releases you from liability as soon as it is filed. Just contact your local DMV ans ask for a trip permit. It should only be a few bucks.

Cool - thanks. Let me ask this. He says he is bringing a certified bank check. I told him that we would need to meet the following day (ie: tomorrow since the banks are closed today) at my bank for them to verify that the check is legit and that the funds are available. Is this OK or should I not accept a certified check. He probably can't bring cash on the plane - over a certain amount....

Any suggestions?

I like to go directly to the buyers bank and do the deal. Otherwise your plan is fine. I just bought a truck private party and took my chances driving it back. I'll head down and get a temp today while I'm waiting on the title fromt he lien holder.

Thanks for all of the help. Thankfully the check was from a national bank and we could go to one of their local branches to cash it - so that worked out well.

Also, I found out that in Indiana the buyer can apply for a 30 day temp registration and tag by showing the signed title and proof of insurance.

The new owner is driving back to New York as I type this.
