It's a real tight fit between the upper bars and the axle and the shock cross brace. If you have the shocks in the lowest position, there isn't room at full jounce. If you plan on running it low, you can easily run the tailpipes straight out from the mufflers and UNDER the axle, then turn up and to the outside, between the tank and tire and out to the rear. The pipes don't show from the outside, and if you are careful, you can use a stock tank. I made mine from the cutting and rearranging the old flowmaster tailpipes I had on the car before.

Our tailpipes go over the axles and you can run nthem pretty low, look at MotiV8r, Back in Black. Yellow car we just finished,

It will be several days before I have time to get good pictures, but here is a cell phone pic. The issue with going over the top would potentially be seen at full compression, and it might be more of a problem on a 12 bolt than a 9in., because of the web at the top of the casting. There is just not much room there, so an over the top pipe would have to be perfectly positioned to guarantee it would never hit. Also since you are going stiffer with coilovers, you might have to be doing some dukes of hazzard maneuvers to bottom out completely anyway. YMMV.

Franks tailpipes look fine, but I had a leftover mandrel bent flowmaster set and decided what the hell. Each side is made up of 5 pieces, and doesn't hang down any lower than the exit pipe from the muffler did before. I still need to finalize a rear hanger and smooth out some of my mediocre welding. With a coat of paint, you won't be able to see it at all and it does the job perfectly. BTW, mine is a 68 w/335's and I have the swaybar mounted on the front side of the axle, going underneath is not an option with the swaybar mounted under the axle.

Exhaust is also run under the axle on Bret's Air Ride camaro, but it looks like they are using bigger pipes than I am, maybe 3"? Of course their car is set up to run extremely low, and I think it has air rides early version of a g-link type suspension.

When I think about it, my rear end was setup different than normal for a 12 bolt. It was cut to center the pinion instead of the normal centering of the housing, so the slight offset may be the issue with the tight over the axle clearance I have. Mock it up and check is the only way to be sure.
