Bare Subframe Question - Lateral-g Forums

I just bought a 1968 Camaro and it's already half way there to being a Pro touring car.

It came with DSE minitubs, front suspension (Global West), QA-1 Coilovers, Sway batrs, Disc Brakes, etc etc. so I only need a bare subframe and not a complete.

I will be installing a Quadralink soon but my main question is...

Will I notice a difference in handling by bolting up an aftermarket subframe?

I know that they are lighter and stronger but is this enough for me too justify spending $$ on a bare aftermarket subframe?

Also, will my Global west control arms bolt up to say a Speedtech.

I know that the DSE control arms are DSE subframe specific.

The biggest difference you will notice going to an aftermarket subframe is it will allow you to run 10" wide front tires and they have rack and pinion steering. You can make a few mods to a stock subframe and make it handle really well. Get a chicane kit from Speed Tech and do the Gulstrand Mod or get a set of ATS spindles and you'll be well on your way. Get a good steering box and a good sway bar added to it. If you don't plan on running 9 or 10" front wheels, probably no real reason to get an aftermarket one, just do yours up. As for using your global west arms on a speed tech sub...yes I believe you can, but take it from me, if you get the speed tech sub, you will want the high clearance control arms. I bought their sub planning on using a normal set of their arms, ended up selling them and got the high clearance ones.

Mike said it perfect in every way.

The difference in the very best aftermarket subframes and a excellent modified factory subframe will come at such a high edge of performance, most will never find the advantages.

If your not racing to win, you will not need a aftermarket subframe. But as men, is OK to buy it anyway!

I have a lot to think about since planning is everything and Pro touring is very new to me...It didn't exist back in the 90's!

Planning is everything. Having a goal, needs, wants (often not the same as needs), budget and schedule are everything. Many a project falls into limbo on these forums due to bad planning, or lack there of. Over spending early in the project on unnessary items, feeling pressure to build to a higher level then we need, or can afford, all tend to stall projects, sometimes forever.

How good is a stock sibframe? Look no further then OLC.
