Default ? for GoPro owners

I'm going on a snorkeling trip in a couple months and could use an underwater camera. Per the web site, the GoPro is good to 180 ft. Can anyone tell me if this is usable as a point and shoot camera while in its waterproof case or is it only able to do video or times photos while in the case?

Thanks

It's usable. Exterior buttons on the case are sealed.

I have used mine SCUBA diving a couple of times and it didn't take very good pictures - low light. If you are snorkeling it may not be a big deal since you won't be all that deep.

Mine is also the original GoPro - so the new ones may be better. I don't even bother to take mine diving any more.
