Question 1955 Ford overdrive

I am a new member to the forum.
I've recently purchased a '55 Ford with 3 speed manual and overdrive.
Can anyone tell me the correct proceedure for using the overdrive? e.g. Do I de-clutch to engage/disengage? What speeds are recommended for the o/d use? etc

works on switch mounted under dash IIRC. that activates the solenoid on the back of the trans. Believe it disengages when the brakes are engaged. Have one on the shelf I picked up for a 56 F250.
