Default Tremec TKO 600

Can someone talk me into or out of buying the Tramec TKO 600 for my 67 Camaro. I have a 468 BBC, Super T-10 (iron case), 12 bolt (4.10:1), and ladder bars right now. My car is not yet on the road, actually in the body shop getting painted. With as much money as I have spent on the Camaro so far, its hard to swallow the $3000 for the TKO 600. I've been trying to use gas milage to justify the purchase but still can't seem to push myself to buying it. So..... Help..... Should I buy or no?

Default Tko 600

We have one in a Camaro and are pleased with it. We deal with Charlie at
Standard Transmissions in Texas. They are a certified dealer and repair for Tremec. He had the best warranty at the time of purchase, a year. His business number is 800-783-8726. Also use the McCleod bellhousing. We had a place in SC to make the chromemoly driveshaft , if you need their number
call us. Billy, Morris Classic Concepts.com

From what I hear its a great tranny, we have one but the car isn't drivable yet so I can give you real advice, all i can say is that you can always do it down the road. If we had a manual trans prior to building the car,(M22), we prob would have stayed with it, but being the car was an automatic and we tore it completly down, I talked my dad into it. Gas Mileage, lower highway rpms, makes the car more friendly to long drives if thats what you want. PLus, it would have coast us about the same to go to a new M22 and convert the car. Goodluck

Thanks for all the info, I appreciate it. Has anyone dealt with classic chevy five speed, I was looking around and they seem to have the best price for the kit. I curently have a lakewood blow bell, is it better to go with the McCleod bell? From what I understand, the Tremec TKO will not fit using any of the 67 Camaro cross members correct? I currently have the Turbo 350 / standard cross member, so I guess I will need one of those as well. I will also need someone to make me a drive shaft, does anyone now the exact length I will need for the Tremec TKO, BBC, 12 bolt combo? Classic Chevy 5 speed has a kit that includes the Tremec TKO, crossmember, trans mount, spedomeeter cable, drive shaft, pilot bearing, shift knob, hardwarekit, offset shifter for $2699. That sounds like a good deal to me, only thing is I live in Hawaii and the shipping is gonna kill me. Do you know if its ok to use a solid trans mount with this transmission? I am running solid mounts on the motor and currecntly have solid mount for the Super T-10 that I have. Sorry for all the questions, I really appreciate all you help and info.
This web site and forum rocks....

If I might ask, what are your intentions for the car, heavy drag strip or the occasional trip to the track and mostly street? I just installed a tko-600 in my PT car and Im proud to say there is life beyond a BW or Muncie and Im a die hard muncie guy with a heavily built m22 behind a 540 w/4.11s. It is so nice to drop that thing in 5th gear on the highway, and have the Rpms come down to 2k, just a real nice cruise. The reason I ask how you will use the car is if it hooks real hard at the track with slicks, on repetitive basis, I would be afraid that gear box may come apart or perhaps something else. I think Im actually lucky that I havent dead hooked my 540, its probably the reason why my drivetrain is still in one piece. As far as the bell goes, I have found that the mcleod is regestered better than the lakewood with respect to the concentricity of the center bore and pilot. You should be fine with the lakewood just make sure you dial indicate it, and use the offset dowel if you need.

Hey Rich,
Well, it seems that we are without a track here in Honolulu for the time being. With no decided date for the new track, I guess my car will be street only for now. Even when there is a track open again, I probably wont use slicks. I realize that I am probably walking a tight line with the 600 ft/lbs the Tremec can take. What other options do I have as far as standard transmissions go? Liberty Bell, Lenko, all out of my budget I'm sure. I've almost always run automatics, and am a bit tired of them. I realize they are faster in a 1/4 mile application, but I want to be more involved in driving my car.

I have, and love, my Tremec. But, as mentioned in another thread, you may have a hard time getting it to engage 3rd at full throttle. I do miss the gear-banging speed shifts from my Muncie.

Also- My Tremec has a 3.27:1 1st gear, and drops to 1.98:1 for 2nd. 1st is almost a granny gear and you may want to re-think your rear if you go with the TKO. I initially had 3.89's in my car and the 1st gear was pretty much a waste. But I'm not doing 1/4 limited driving. Just keep an eye on that gearing. It may not be the best for drag racing, but it kicks butt for everything else!

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it.
Whats the issue with full throttle 2nd to 3rd shift? Is this a known issue with the Tremec? What causes it to happen?
